SHIN'S POV

"Did he just say 'ours'?" My heart raced a bit, hearing that. Why are they acting like this all of a sudden? Do they really hate Dr. Reid that much? He might be a little strange but he’s been nice to me. I’ll apologize to him later.

"Hey, let's go back. Your mom is waiting for us," Ruka said while his hand was ruffling my hair.

“Are you really angry with me?” I asked, feeling a little nervous. Their moods always affected me more than I liked to admit.

Ruka sighed, a gentler expression taking over his face. "No, we’re not angry. Just... worried." His tone was soft and there was something protective in the way he looked at me.

Then Luca added, his voice firmer, "Next time, avoid letting people get so close or touching you, okay? It doesn’t matter if they're nice. We just want you to be careful."

I tried to explain, looking up at Luca. “But Dr. Reid is a kind person, like you said. He’s just... well, maybe a bit weird.”

Luca's expression didn’t change, his eyes still serious. "Regardless, please avoid it. And, by the way, we’re still not okay about Juri hanging around and touching you all the time. She’s your friend so we’re holding back. But it’s not easy for us."

Holding back? From what? They had always been a bit protective but since we started going out, it seemed more intense. Just as I opened my mouth to apologize for causing them to worry, something small bumped against the back of my legs.

"Huh? What was that?" I turned to look down and saw a little girl rubbing her forehead. She looked up at me, her big, round eyes sparkling with surprise.

"I... I’m sorry," she mumbled, her voice soft and shy.

She was adorable in her bright yellow dress but where were her parents? She looked so young to be wandering alone. Could she be lost?

"Luca, carry me!" the little girl squealed, reaching up toward him, her tiny arms outstretched.

I blinked, feeling confused. She knew Luca? I glanced at him, searching for answers but before I could say anything Luca crouched down with a gentle smile.

"Mika, what are you doing here?" he asked, his tone much softer than usual. So her name was Mika… Wait, could she be his daughter? Did he have a family I didn’t know about?

Before I could process that thought, Ruka grabbed my shoulder. “Shin, stop imagining things. She’s our little sister—well, our stepsister.”

My shoulders relaxed but I noticed that Ruka didn’t look very happy. His gaze stayed on Mika but it wasn’t soft or caring like Luca’s. Instead, there was a slight frown and he looked almost… annoyed.

Luca gently picked up Mika, holding her as if she were fragile. But Ruka’s frown only deepened.

"Luca, put her down. If she’s here, then she must be here too," Ruka said, his voice tight.

I looked back and forth between them, feeling lost. Who were they talking about?

Just then, a sharp voice echoed down the hallway.

“Mika, get over here!”

I turned to see a tall, elegant woman walking toward us. Her clothes were sleek and expensive-looking and she held herself with an air of authority. She looked from Luca to Ruka, then her eyes landed on me, her gaze slowly sweeping up and down. The look on her face was… unpleasant as if I were something she’d rather not deal with. I know those eyes, how could I not? Those are the same eyes that my bullies use to make and it makes me feel that I'm better off not existing.
