SHIN'S POV

The water dripping down my body felt colder than usual and I shivered slightly, trying to push the day's events out of my mind. If I was this confused, struggling to even understand how I felt, then how much harder must it be for Ruka and Luca? I had no idea they were dealing with such heavy stuff with their mother. They’d always seemed so positive and kind, the type of people who would do anything for someone they cared about. When they saved me, I felt so grateful. Now, maybe it was my turn to be there for them.

I knew there had to be more to their mother than met the eye. There was something hidden there but I couldn’t quite figure out what it was.

"Ahh! What the he—" I winced as shampoo slipped into my eyes, making me blink hard and curse under my breath. “Okay, Shin,” I muttered, feeling a little foolish, "just focus on taking a bath. You can figure out the rest tomorrow."

After finishing my shower, I towel-dried my hair, dressed, and went to sit on my bed, pulling the blanket over my legs to keep warm. I grabbed my philosophy book, flipping open to the page I’d left off on. I’d planned on reading just a little bit before bed—something to distract me from everything else and besides I had an essay due on Monday. Philosophy was interesting to me, a way to understand how different people saw the world, what they believed about the universe, and what really mattered in life. I found myself getting lost in the pages but eventually I felt my eyelids growing heavy.

Yawning, I glanced over at the clock on my bedside table. “What the— it’s already this late?” It was past midnight. I’d meant to go to sleep earlier but the book had completely absorbed my attention. I set it down and closed my eyes.

But sleeping alone tonight felt oddly lonely. I’d gotten so used to Ruka and Luca being there with me, their comforting presence just a reach away. Knowing they were just in their room didn’t make much of a difference—I still missed them. I chuckled to myself realizing that I really did like them.

I wasn’t sure how much time had passed but I woke up suddenly, my throat dry and scratchy. I groggily opened my eyes, still half-asleep. “I need water…” I mumbled but I didn’t want to get up. I glanced at the clock. It was only 11:30 pm, and I hadn’t even been asleep for an hour.

Groaning, I pulled myself out of bed, dragging my feet as I stumbled to the door. I was too tired to even bother turning on the lights so I made my way to the kitchen in the dark. The whole house was quiet and my eyelids felt like they were barely staying open as I went into the kitchen. Reaching the fridge, I pulled out a cold bottle of water and took a long drink. I felt the coolness ease the dryness in my throat.

Still sleepy, I turned to go back to my room, eager to crawl under the blankets and drift off. But as I passed the hall near Ruka and Luca’s room a strange sound made me stop.

“...Agh…”

I froze, my heart suddenly pounding. “Wh-what… what is that?” I whispered to myself, feeling a shiver run down my spine. For a moment, my tired brain couldn’t come up with an explanation and a ridiculous thought crossed my mind "Is..is there a ghost?"

The sound came again, faint but clear and suddenly I wasn’t feeling so sleepy anymore. In fact, I was wide awake, my nerves on edge. I started to walk faster wanting to get back to my room and away from whatever creepy noise I was hearing. But then the sound came again, this time a little louder.

Ngh… ah…”

I froze again, my pulse racing. My mind was jumping to the worst conclusions, thinking of all sorts of scary things. But then I heard something that made my stomach flip.

“…Lu… Luca…”

My heart skipped a beat. Luca? Wait, that voice sounded like Ruka. What was he…?

Realizing I was close to their room, I moved slowly, tiptoeing forward until I was standing just outside their slightly open door. I could hear soft sounds, breathing and moans. My mind was racing, piecing things together but I wasn’t sure what to think. My curiosity got the better of me and I leaned in just enough to peek through the crack in the door.

My eyes went wide and I felt my face flush with shock. Ruka and Luca were on the bed together, their bodies close, wrapped up in each other. They were holding each other so tightly, like they were sharing some deep connection I couldn’t quite understand. Ruka’s hands were running along Luca’s back, while Luca’s hands traced Ruka’s arms and shoulders with such tenderness that I could barely breathe.

The room was filled with the sound of their soft breaths, and I felt my heart pounding in my chest. Ruka’s voice broke the quiet, barely more than a whisper. “There… harder,” he murmured, his eyes closed as Luca seemed to understand, his hands pressing into Ruka’s back, just like he asked. I wasn’t sure what I was seeing and my thoughts were a jumble of confusion and disbelief.

“W-what… what the heck are they doing?” I whispered under my breath, barely able to tear my eyes away. They looked so… vulnerable, like they were sharing something important, something intimate that went beyond words. The way they looked at each other, their eyes soft and filled with something unspoken, made my chest tighten. I’d always known they were close but this was something else entirely.
