Today was the day.

It was Kayson's 18th birthday.

The past few weeks had been unusually quiet. Isabella and I hadn't spoken since I kicked her out of my room, and I could tell she was avoiding me.

I wanted to talk to her, try to work things out—but I didn't see that conversation happening anytime soon.

I did talk to Kayson about it, though. He said he knew Isabella was into him but didn't want to stress me out. That explains why he's been so stand-offish with her from the start.

And I thought he was just being his usual grumpy self.

Right now, I was with River and Andy, shopping for Kayson's surprise birthday party. I swear, the stores hate to see me coming.

"Riv, do I need to blindfold both of you? And Bella you're not even having a kid yet, why are you throwing baby clothes in the basket?" Andy sighed, clearly over our bullshit.

"Isn't this cute? Honey, I want another baby!" River gushed, eyes sparkling. I giggled as Andy's eyes went wide.

"We have six, though?" Andy questioned, raising a brow.

"Six?" I laughed. River smiled at me fondly.

"Well, yes. You're part of the family now," She said, and Andy nodded next to her. Oh.

"I'll cry," I sniffled, and she pulled me into a bone-crushing hug.

"You've made my kids so happy, and you don't know how much that means to Andy and I," Her voice cracked, and I started tearing up.

"If you guys cry in the Walmart baby aisle, I'll throw up," Andy said bluntly. River and I giggled before pulling apart.

"He's very grateful as well." She rolled her eyes. I smiled.

I'm grateful, too.

Later

Kayson doesn't really like parties. But he doesn't mind them if it's just close family and friends, even if he pretends to have a terrible time.

Also, I may or may not have gotten him to admit he didn't mind the parties, so I knew we weren't crossing any lines with this surprise party, hopefully.

I was in my room finishing my makeup before taking him out for the day. Briella had distracted Kayson at home by having him help with her homework — and yes, at 6 a.m, she woke him up for it.

Kayson wasn't thrilled, but she told him she had an important test that day and was on the brink of failing. Complete lie, by the way.

It was noon, and the party was at 4 p.m. Kayson was on his way to pick me up. Yes, he was picking me up on his birthday so I could take him out. I would try to convince him to let me drive, but I knew he'd feel more comfortable if I didn't.
