Kammy sat beside me across from our parents on the couch. Ma was emotional because we had just told her and Dad that we wanted to meet our biological parents. Dad was consoling her, his hand resting gently on her lower back while the other one held her hand softly.

"Y-You've both grown so much," Ma sniffled as Dad wiped her tears from under her glasses.

"Sorry Mama, we didn't mean to upset you," Kammy stated softly, fiddling with her fingers. Ma giggled softly, shaking her head.

"I'm not upset, I'm quite the opposite. I'm so proud of you two, especially you Kayson. You wanted absolutely nothing to do with your biological parents, now look at you," She smiled lightly.

"I still don't," I stated, leaning back. "This isn't about them. It's about us. We need closure."

And I meant it.

For years I shut every door on that part of my life, nailed them shut if I had to. Built those walls so high up so that no one would be even close to knocking them down. No amount of therapy could get me to open up to the idea of ever speaking to them again.

But Kammy...she deserved to look through that door one more time and not wonder what was on the other side. And maybe I did too, even if I hated to admit it.

Ma's smile softened.

"You're healing, sweetheart. You used to crash out whenever we mentioned them," She laughed lightly as I cringed.

"You don't gotta bring that up," I mumbled, looking away.

"Do you two want us to go with you?" Dad cut in, calmly.

I shake my head.

"No. I don't know how this is going to go, and I'd rather it be private," I stated, looking at Kammy as she shyly nodded in agreement.

"But if it does goes well..." Ma trails off, looking off to the side. I raise a brow at her and Dad sighs.

"We aren't going anywhere. You two are my parents, not them," I assured.

"You raised us, you're our family. You found us and gave us the unconditional love that any child would dream of," Kammy said, her voice filled with raw emotion.

"Stop it you two, or I'll start crying again," Ma's voice went up an octave at the end as she swallowed.

"Please don't." Dad muttered, and Ma playfully swatted at his shoulder. Kammy and I laughed lightly.

"When do you guys plan on seeing them?" Dad asked.

"Tomorrow in the afternoon," I stated, he nodded.
