Color Filter Bar, after almost two years away, Jay spotted Jung Kook in the dim light, catching a glimpse of his friend.
Jung Kook had an uncanny ability to stand out no matter where he was. To find him, you just had to follow the obsessive gazes of the women around. He was sitting on the second floor near the railing, his tie slightly loosened, holding a glass of red wine, his eyes full of charm.
"I never thought I'd be the one keeping you waiting, Jung Kook," Jay laughed, standing at the table with open arms, ready for a hug. "Welcome back."
Jung Kook looked at Jay coolly, set down his glass, and said, "Sit."
"So cold? I just wanted to give you a welcome hug." Jay sat down, a bit disappointed.
Jung Kook refilled his wine glass, and they toasted, their glasses clinking together.
"I heard you're planning to get into Seoul's real estate market?" Jay asked.
"You know I didn't come to you for that," Jung Kook replied.
Jay fell silent, setting down his glass. "I know you're here because of Hanni. But I told you, she's already married. Graceful women may be rare, but they do exist, let's not get involved with someone else's wife."
Jung Kook looked at Jay without a word.
"Don't look at me like that. It's unsettling." Jay said. "Honestly, I've been wanting to ask, don't you think you're a bit strange? If you like Hanni, why didn't you reach out to her all these years? You always said the timing wasn't right. And when Hyein was sick recently, didn't the overseas bone marrow bank contact you? You didn't even want me to tell her."
"If you say you don't like her, then why do you keep having me look out for her? And she secretly helps you whenever she can," Jay said, genuinely perplexed. "So, do you like her or not?"
"What do you think?" Jung Kook asked.
Jay thought for a moment and said, "You truly liked her back in university, now... maybe not so much."
Jung Kook didn't answer directly but took a folder from beside him and handed it to Jay.
Jay was surprised, then opened it and read under the tab. "So, Hanni was forced?"
"The Hanni you know, would she go on a blind date before her sister fully recovered, and then get married?" Jung Kook asked.
"So, what are you going to do?" Jay asked.
Jung Kook turned to look at the people in the bar. What came to mind was the girl in the university library who shyly hid behind the bookshelves. "I want to give her a choice," he said.
"So..." Jay understood from his friend's words. "You don't like Hanni anymore."
Jung Kook smiled, pulling a pretty girl from a nearby table over for a kiss, then said, "I liked Hanni back in university. Now... I'm not sure."
"Then why are you still investigating Hanni?" Jay asked.
"She's a beautiful part of my memories," Jung Kook said. "Even if we can't be together, I want the best for her."
"So what will you do?" Jay asked.
"I'll find someone to contact Hanni's second uncle. If necessary, I'll reinvest capital to keep Pham's influence out of Kim's control," Jung Kook said.
"That's 300 billion won, and it might offend the Kim family," Jay sighed. "Are you sure you don't like Hanni?"
Jung Kook smiled without responding. Like her or not, he wasn't entirely certain himself. Five years of distance can change many things. The people you once loved, you may not love anymore, even if you still do, they're no longer the same.
