Tw: mentions of suicide
_____It was Jake's birthday, and for the first time in a long time, he felt like he was sinking.
The day had started off with a heaviness he couldn't shake, as if a dark cloud had followed him everywhere.
The members had been busy with schedules, rehearsals, and promotions, but he had tried to stay optimistic, even though he had this gnawing feeling that they had forgotten.
He had woken up to a quiet room. No balloons, no confetti, no early morning birthday surprises.
The silence was suffocating, and he had tried to brush it off, convincing himself that it was just another busy day. His grandma had always been the one to make his birthdays special, her calls and her laughter always filling him with warmth.
But this year... this year was different.
As the day went on, there was no mention of his birthday from any of the members.
He had grown used to the camaraderie of the group, the easy conversations, the shared laughter, but today it felt distant. Maybe they were just caught up in their own worlds. Or maybe, he thought bitterly, they simply didn't care.
It wasn't until the evening, just as he was about to give up hope, that something changed.
He was sitting alone in the lounge, scrolling aimlessly on his phone, when the door suddenly burst open.
"Surprise!"
The members jumped in, their faces lighting up with excitement. A large cake was brought forward, candles flickering atop it. There were balloons, confetti, and a chorus of "Happy Birthday" from all of them. Jake blinked, his chest tightening.
"Wait, really?" He didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
"Of course, hyung! You didn't think we'd forget, did you?" Sunghoon smiled, his eyes warm.
For a moment, Jake forgot about everything. The doubt, the loneliness, the absence of his grandma's comforting voice.
His heart swelled with gratitude. Maybe this would be the birthday that made up for all the emptiness of the day.
He stood up, ready to blow out the candles, the cool wax scent of the cake filling the air.
But just as he was about to lean in and make a wish, his phone buzzed. It was his mom. His heart skipped a beat, and he stepped away, answering quickly.
"Jake, honey... I... I'm so sorry," his mom's voice was shaky, filled with an emotion he couldn't quite place. "Grandma... she passed away."
The world seemed to stop.
His body went cold.
The warmth of the room disappeared as his vision blurred. He staggered back a few steps, the phone slipping from his hand.
The cake, the candles, the members. All of it felt so distant, so unreal.
His grandmother, the one constant in his life, was gone. She had been everything to him. His support, his light in the darkness, his reason to smile.
