It wasn't often that the playground stayed busy after sunset, but tonight was different. The park's dim lamplights cast long shadows, and the usual cacophony of children had quieted to a soft murmur. Most of the younger kids had been taken home, leaving only the occasional jogger or someone strolling with their dog.
But you and Rin Itoshi remained, as always, in your corner of the playground.
The chill of the evening had set in, prompting you to pull your hoodie tighter around yourself. Rin, however, seemed oblivious to the cold. He was still practicing, his movements sharp and precise despite the fading light. His soccer ball thudded rhythmically against the wall, like a heartbeat keeping time with his determination.
"You know," you called out, your voice breaking the silence, "most people would call it a day by now. It's late."
Rin caught the ball with his foot, holding it still as he glanced over at you. "Most people aren't trying to be the best," he said simply, his tone calm but resolute.
"Yeah, but even the best need rest." You tucked your knees to your chest, balancing your notebook on them. The sketches you'd been working on were rough, just outlines of Rin mid-kick or poised to strike. Somehow, capturing his focus on paper felt more challenging than usual tonight.
"I'll rest when I beat him," Rin muttered, turning back to the wall.
"Your brother again?" you asked. You couldn't help the curiosity that bubbled up whenever he mentioned his family.
Rin nodded, his shoulders tense. "Sae." He said the name quietly, almost like it carried a weight he didn't want to acknowledge. "He's everything I'm not. Everyone says he's a genius."
You watched him carefully, noticing the way his hands curled into fists even as he controlled the ball with his feet. "Do you hate him?"
The question hung in the air, heavier than you'd intended. Rin hesitated before responding, his voice quieter this time. "I don't know. Sometimes I think I do. Other times... I just want to be like him."
There was something raw in his words, something that made your chest ache. You'd never seen Rin falter before, not like this.
"Well, I don't think you need to be like him," you said, standing and brushing off your jeans.
He turned to look at you, his teal-green eyes narrowing slightly. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"I mean, you're already you," you said, stepping closer. "Why try to be someone else? You've got your own thing going. Your own strengths. If you focus on that, I bet you'll outshine him someday."
Rin stared at you, his expression unreadable. For a moment, you wondered if you'd said something wrong. Then, to your surprise, a faint smirk tugged at his lips.
"You always think you know everything," he said, his tone teasing.
"Maybe I do," you shot back, grinning. "And I'm always right, so you should listen to me."
He shook his head, but there was a softness in his gaze that hadn't been there before. "You're weird," he muttered, but there was no bite to the words.
"And you're stubborn," you countered. "Guess we make a good pair."
That earned you a small chuckle, one that made the chilly evening feel just a little warmer. Rin turned back to his ball, resuming his drills with renewed focus. You settled back down on the edge of the sandbox, watching him quietly.
The minutes stretched into hours, and the park grew quieter still. Finally, Rin stopped, letting the ball roll to a halt at his feet. He wiped his forehead with the back of his hand and looked over at you.
"You didn't have to stay this long," he said. "I thought you'd leave ages ago."
You shrugged, closing your notebook and tucking it under your arm. "Someone has to make sure you don't overwork yourself."
Rin raised an eyebrow. "And why do you care?"
You hesitated, searching for the right words. Finally, you settled on the truth. "Because I believe in you. Even when you don't."
For a moment, Rin didn't respond. He just stared at you, his expression softer than you'd ever seen it. The moonlight caught the edges of his teal eyes, making them seem even brighter.
"Thanks," he said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.
You smiled, a warm feeling spreading through your chest. "Anytime, Rin."
As the two of you began the walk home, the playground fading into the distance behind you, you felt a sense of certainty settle in your heart. Rin Itoshi was relentless, driven, and maybe a little too hard on himself—but he wasn't alone.
And no matter what challenges lay ahead, you'd be there to remind him of that.
