The days turned into weeks, and somehow, without either of you realizing it, you and Rin had formed an unspoken truce. He would claim the wall by the sandbox as his "training ground," and you would perch nearby, your notebook balanced on your knees, sketching his movements or doodling whatever came to mind.
He never said much, but Rin's presence spoke louder than words. The way he practiced with relentless precision, the way his teal eyes followed the ball like a hawk hunting its prey—it was mesmerizing.
One particularly crisp afternoon, the sky painted a pale blue and the leaves rustling with the faint promise of autumn, Rin's usual precision seemed to falter. His passes lacked their usual sharpness, the ball slipping from his control more than once.
"You're off today," you said, breaking the silence.
Rin whipped around to glare at you, sweat glistening on his forehead. "No, I'm not."
"Yeah, you are," you said, setting your notebook aside. You didn't need to sugarcoat things with him; he'd never buy it anyway. "What's wrong?"
For a moment, Rin just stood there, his shoulders rising and falling with each breath. His gaze flickered to the ground, and his lips pressed into a thin line. He didn't want to answer, you could tell, but something in him cracked.
"I lost to my brother," he muttered, kicking a stray pebble.
Your eyebrows lifted. Rin had never mentioned his family before, let alone a brother. "Your brother? He plays soccer too?"
"He's better than me," Rin admitted reluctantly. "Always has been. No matter how hard I train, I can't beat him."
It was strange, hearing him sound like this. Rin, who carried himself with the confidence of someone who could conquer the world, sounded...defeated.
You frowned, stepping closer. "So what?"
Rin's head shot up, his teal-green eyes narrowing. "What do you mean, 'so what'?"
"I mean, so what if he's better than you right now? That doesn't mean he'll always be better." You crossed your arms, meeting his gaze head-on. "You're already really good, Rin. And if you keep practicing, I bet you'll beat him someday. You just have to keep trying."
For a moment, he didn't say anything. His gaze lingered on yours, the frustration in his eyes slowly giving way to something softer. "You really think so?"
You smiled. "Of course I do. You're annoying, but you're also the most determined person I've ever met. If anyone can do it, it's you."
The corners of his mouth twitched, almost as if he was trying not to smile. "You're weird," he said, but his voice lacked its usual edge.
"Says the guy who spends hours kicking a ball against a wall," you shot back, grinning.
For the first time since you'd met him, Rin let out a quiet chuckle. It was brief and barely there, but it was real.
"Fine," he said, picking up his ball and balancing it on his foot. "If you think I can beat him, I guess I have no choice but to prove you right."
"That's the spirit," you said, sitting back down on the edge of the sandbox. "Now, show me that trick you were working on yesterday. The one with the spin."
He smirked, the fire returning to his eyes. "Watch closely, then. You might learn something."
The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur of sharp kicks, precise spins, and the rhythmic thud of the ball against the wall. Rin pushed himself harder than ever, and you watched, sketching his movements in your notebook with renewed focus.
As the sun dipped lower in the sky, painting the world in shades of orange and gold, you couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. Rin was determined to grow stronger, to overcome the shadow of his brother. And in your own way, you were determined too—to support him, to keep pushing him forward whenever doubt threatened to pull him back.
"Hey, [Your Name]," Rin called as he caught the ball on the rebound.
"Yeah?"
He hesitated, his expression unreadable. "Thanks."
You blinked, surprised. "For what?"
"For... being here," he said, his gaze flickering away. "It's not so bad having someone to talk to."
A warmth spread through your chest, but you kept your tone casual. "Don't get used to it. I'm only here because I'm too nice to let you sulk by yourself."
Rin rolled his eyes, but there was a faint smile on his lips as he turned back to the wall. "Whatever you say."
And as the stars began to dot the evening sky, you realized that this strange, stubborn boy had become more than just a fleeting part of your life. He was a constant—a steady presence who, in his own quiet way, had begun to matter more than you ever expected.
