Chapter 18

"I'm so proud of you, my baby!" Inilapit ko ang mukha ko sa pagitan ng passenger at drivers seat para sumilip sa phone ni Nanay. She was staring at the email I forwarded that the Rigal sent me.

"I already sent this to your Mamita. Paniguradong matutuwa iyon."

"I bet Mama wouldn't be shocked about that. Mana ka kaya ng katalinuhan sa Nanay mo." Lumakas ang tawa ko ng kumindat pa si Tatay kay Nanay.

"Tumigil ka nga, Tay!" Tatay grunt in pain when Nanay slapped his arm.

Sumandal ako sa upuan ko at inilipat ang atensyon sa labas ng sasakyan. I was distracted by the night lights outside the city but I can still hear my parents cheesy banter with each other.

We would laugh from time to time when Tatay would make his usual corny dads joke.

"Should we go straight to Mama's house?" I glared at Tatay and punched his arm lightly, making him laugh.

"Tatay!" I whined, shaking his seat. Umagree na siya kanina na kakain kami sa labas.

"Biro lang, anak! To your favorite restaurant it is!"

"Ayaw mo na ba sa luto ni Mamita?" Nanay put away her phone, shifting from her seat to look at me.

"I want to treat you both okay? Let's celebrate outside!" I crossed my arms.

"Ang yabang naman, wala pang sahod iyan ah. Baka dalhin mo kami ni Nanay sa Korea sa first salary mo." I jokingly rolled my eyes at Tatay earning a giggle from Nanay.

"Inaasar mo na naman ang baby ko." Ngumuso ako at isinandal sa upuan ni Nanay ang ulo ko.

I closed my eyes, sighing when I felt Nanay's warm hand brush against my hair, combing it softly. I really like how I could feel Nanay's hand on my scalp and how she would caress my hair so gently.

"Big girl na ang baby ko. You'll work for yourself na, you can already live without me and you tatay. I'm so proud of you, anak. You grew up strong and independent." I opened my eyes just to meet Nanay's tearful eyes.

"Nanay, don't say that. You're making me cry!" Umayos ako ng upo para tingnan ng maayos ang mukha niya.

"Tatay and I love you always. Don't ever forget that." My eyes started to get blurry because of my tears.

"I love you t-"

Things happened fast. I saw how Nanay's face brightened and her eyes widened because of the car's bright light that was driving fast to us.

My eyes that started to become blurry because of tears got darker when I felt the pain in my body when a car hit our car. Nararamdaman ko ang panginginig ng buong katawan ko dahil sa sakit. I felt the rough texture of the road scrape my cheek.

Our car was upside down.

Everything is so dark and the surrounding is so noisy but I could hear my own heavy breathing.

"Nanay? Tatay?" I could barely hear my voice.

I tried to open my eyes, but the darkness clung to me, thick and suffocating. I could only see blurry shapes-twisted metal, broken glass, flashing red and blue lights.
