tw: slight violence (the end of S2 is probably going to be the craziest version of Rafe that I write for this story)

Rafe Cameron hadn't killed Renfield, the man whose body the pogues just found in the boat.

Limbrey had killed Renfield.

Rafe had found the cross, and taken it to the woman. He'd tried to be discreet about it, trying to get only her, but Renfield found out they were meeting anyway, and came to confront them.

Rafe tried to offer Renfield cash for his half of the cross, but the man wasn't accepting it, because honestly, neither of them knew how much the cross would actually sell for.

Rafe hadn't lost hope though. Rafe knew he was going to find a way to keep the cross for himself, to deliver it to Bexley like he needed to. He knew he'd figure out a way to get it away from Renfield eventually. Because things always worked out for him. Always. In the end, Limbrey fixed things before he had to do anything.

Like Limbrey said, she only wanted the cloth that was supposed to be locked inside the cross. But it wasn't there. It was gone, missing, maybe eaten by moths.

Renfield made too many jokes about it. He laughed at the woman for putting all her hope in some 'magic healing cloth' that didn't exist.

The two of them fought, and Renfield tossed Limbrey on the ground, and planned to leave her there.

Rafe didn't know she had a gun, neither of them did. But she had one, and she shot and killed Renfield with it.

Of course she did. Because everything always worked out for Rafe Cameron. The woman took out his one true threat to keeping the cross for himself.

Rafe took the cross that night, and texted Bexley right away.

He almost couldn't believe she was actually willing to meet him. His heart sped up when she'd texted him. It felt like his adrenaline was pumping for hours, from the first text to the moment they planned to meet. He didn't trust the pogues not to intrude on their meeting. Even if Bexley wasn't planning to trick him, even if she specifically told the pogues not to follow her, he knew how sneaky and manipulative they were, how they could follow her without her even realizing it.

So Rafe gave her a different location than she originally gave him, a place where he couldn't be snuck up on.

Or at least, a place he thought he couldn't be snuck up on.

When Bexley arrived at the restaurant, Rafe thought things were finally going to change for the better.

The cross was waiting for them back at his house. He was going to take her there by boat, and the two of them could spend the night planning where they wanted to go, what they wanted to do, who they wanted to be.

No, he didn't bring the cross like he said he would. Honestly, he had planned to, but he realized at the last minute that it would disrupt the weight capacity of the boat. He physically couldn't take it. So he'd left it in the semi truck at home.

Yes, Renfield's body was on the boat.

Because he knew he needed to toss it. And he had meant to do so before meeting Bexley, but he'd lost track of time and realized he wouldn't be able to. He hid it in one of the rooms, and was going to dump it on the way home, hoping Bexley would fall asleep like she usually did on the boat and not notice.
