Origins: The Australian Kelpie developed from the 1870s when Scotland transported the Scottish Smooth Collie into Australia for sheep herding.

Lifespan: 10-13 years
Coat: Double layered, short length fur that is weather resistant. They usually shed minimally, but the amounts can vary depending on the season.
Colors: Black, black and tan, red and tan, fawn, red, chocolate, blue
Tail: Long with slight curvature
Ears: Pointy
Health: They are known to be healthy dogs. However they may be prone to hip dysplasia, knee issues, eye diseases, and obesity. There is also the risk of a brain condition called Cerebellar Abiotrophy that causes them to have trouble with coordination and balance.
Barking: Australian Kelpies are known to bark often.
Environment: They need a rural or suburban home with plenty of outdoor space to play and explore. This breed should not live in apartments or condos.
Popularity: There are two to three million Australian Kelpies worldwide. They are mainly seen within Australia, being one of the top breeds in the country.
Family Friendly? Yes, they are great family pets among those with previous dog owning experience! They may not be the best choice for households with younger children because they could try to heard them. They do well with other pets except for smaller animals due to their prey drive.
Temperament: Smart, affectionate, playful, friendly, curious, protective, and loyal
Training: Somewhat difficult because they can get distracted. However, they can be quick learners. It helps when training sessions are routinely scheduled.
Care: This dog requires a diet that contains real meat, it should not have chemical preservatives or artificial coloring. They need one to two hours of exercise per day. It is best if play/exercise periods are spread out rather than all at once. They should start getting socialization as a puppy. Brushing should be done weekly.
