Origins: The Berger Picard is from a French village called Picardy. They were originally bred to herd and protect livestock, specifically sheep and cows. They would road in pastures all day long.

Height: 55–65 cm
Lifespan: 12-13 years
Coat: Shaggy, double-layered fur that sheds moderately, but the amounts vary depending on the season. The top is wiry, and the underneath is softer. The fur is roughly 2-2.5 inches (5-6 cm) long on the body.
Colors: Fawn, grey, a mixture of browns.
Tail: Long with curvature.
Ears: Pointy
Health: This dog is generally healthy but prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, eye/vision problems, heart conditions, dental issues, bloat, obesity, and skin allergies.
Barking: The Berger Picard is a highly vocal breed.
Environment: They are normally adaptable to various environments as long as they are given plenty of space to play. Due to their barking, apartments and condos may not be suitable homes unless they are properly trained.
Popularity: In 2023, the American Kennel Club ranked them number 157 out of 201 dog breeds. There are roughly 400 Berger Picards in the USA and Canada combined. In France, there are approximately 3,500 and 500 in Germany.
Family Friendly? This dog can be a good choice for experienced families with older children. Because of their herding instincts, they may not be suitable for households with young kids and other pets.
Temperament: Smart, stubborn, loyal, affectionate, lively, silly, patient, and protective
Training: Difficult. This breed is stubborn and will test their owners' boundaries, but their intelligence makes them trainable.
Care: The Berger Pichard needs at least two hours of daily exercise and socialization starting at a young age. They typically can only be left alone for 3-4 hours at a time. They should be brushed once or twice a month but not bathed unless dirty. They also love physical contact once they have built trust with a person.
