Origins: The Black Russian Terrier was bred in Russia during the 1930s and 40s for military purposes. They were developed by the Red Star Kennel. 

Weight: 80-150 lbs

Height: 66-72 cm

Lifespan: 10-12 years

Coat: Thick weather-resistant fur that is double layered. The top layer is wavy and dense, while the under layer is softer. They shed moderately throughout the year.

Colors: Black, or salt and pepper

Tail: Their high tails have been traditionally docked, but now they are often left long and have curvature.

Ears: V-shaped

Health: This dog is typically healthy but they are prone to bloat, hip and elbow dysplasia, bladder and kidney stones, thyroid issues, heart disease, eye/vision problems, 

Barking: Black Russian Terriers will bark on occasion. They will bark because of separation anxiety, lack of exercise, boredom, or if they sense a threat.

Environment: This dog may need a large space because of their size. However, they can often adapt well to apartments and condos.

Popularity: In 2023, the American Kennel Club ranked them number 128 on a popularity scale out of 200 dog breeds.

Family Friendly? These dogs make good pets for experienced families with older children. Because of their size they may not suitable in households within young kids and elderly people. They often do well around other pets but may be aggressive around small pets and unfamiliar animals, so supervision could be necessary. It is recommended that Black Russian Terriers do not live with other big, dominant dogs.

Temperament: Brave, energetic, highly protective, loyal, smart, strong, and affectionate 

Training: Somewhat easy 

Care: 40 minutes to one hour of exercise per day plus mental stimulation. They need monthly baths and coat trimmings on their beards. Their nails and tears need to be checked regularly. Their food should be high quality designed for large breeds.

Famous Black Russian Terriers: In 2018, Oli set records scoring the most points by a Black Russian Terrier in a single year at the Black Russian Terrier Club of America National Specialty.

- Their beards can soak up a lot of water when they drink.

- They are good in harsh, cold weather.
