Origins: This breed formed when settlers brought them to Terceira Island in Portugal in the 1500s to help with herding cattle and guarding livestock.
Weight: 55–66 lbs (male), 46–57 lbs (female)
Height: 52–58 cm (male), 48–54 cm (female)
Lifespan: 12-15 years
Coat: Long and wavy double coat that does not shed. They have hair that continues to grow.
Colors: Yellow, grey, black, fawn. White patches may be on the chest, belly and tip of the tail
Tail: Long and fluffy
Ears: V-shape, down to jaw
Health: May be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, allergies, and eye/vision problems
Barking: This dog will dark on occasion. It is usually to alert owners.
Environment: They need plenty of room to run around, preferably with an outdoor yard. They may not be suitable for apartments due to a lack of space and the dog often barks at unfamiliar sounds, disrupting neighbors.
Popularity: Very rare outside of Portugal, but they have been Increasing in popularity in the United States and other counties around the globe.
Family Friendly? Yes, this dog is highly suitable for families. They can be good with elderly people, but a one-on-one companionship may not work out. They are typically good with children and other pets, but may need time adjusting when first meeting them. Because these dogs are herders, they could try to herd them.
Temperament: Loyal, sensitive, smart, friendly, and fun
Training: Easy - avoid punishments by using positive reinforcement instead.
Care: This dog does not do well when left alone for long periods. They need daily exercise and activity. They should be brushed, have their nails trimmed, and ears cleaned regularly. They should get a haircut when their coat gets too long (starting to get more tangled than usual and impacting daily activities). Summer cuts are typically not needed because their undercoat keeps them cool. Puppies may need supplements in their diet like glucosamine, chondroitin, and calcium to help with growth.
