Origins: Bearded Collies are one of the oldest British dog breeds and were made to herd sheep and cattle. They originated from the 1500s in Scotland and from the Scottish Shepherd Dog and the Polish Lowland Sheepdog.

Coat: Double-layered, shaggy, and wooly fur that sheds in large amounts

Health: Typically healthy but prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, eye/vision problems, parasites, ear infections, skin allergies, Addison's disease, and knee ligament tears.
Barking: Breaded Collies have a loud bark. They vocalize often but not to the same extent as some other breeds.
Environment: Bearded Collies do best in a house with a large fenced yard or on farmland.
Popularity: In 2023, Bearded Collies were ranked 154 on the American Kennel Club's most popular dog breed list.
Family Friendly? Yes, this dog is suitable for active families. They usually do well with small children and other pets. They are known for being protective.
Temperament: With the proper care they are smart, playful, friendly, happy, gentle, loyal, alert, reliable, curious, independent, and affectionate.
Training: Somewhat easy. Bearded Collies enjoy learning but they may be stubborn or have a tendency to get board. Owners should make training fun. They need trainers who are firm and patient. Additionally, they need to be taught not to herd people and other animals. Without proper training they may be nippy.
Care: This dog needs daily brushing, exercise, and mental stimulation. They should not be left alone more than six hours at a time. Regular ear checks and nail trims are necessary. Because of their skin issues, owners should apply zinc-free sunblock to their dog's nose.
