"The... last one..." Neo reached the warm bowl of stew to you and you carefully placed it on top of the rest. You'd been working all afternoon to prepare the meals for the kids, and you were grateful for your brother's help. You would have been way more tired without his assistance, that was for sure. You still needed to fly out as well and the day was already coming to an end.
"Thank you, Neo." you smiled at him gratefully as you zipped the bag closed and then wiped your hair out of your forehead with the back of your hand. Tiredly, you leaned against the desk behind you and felt your brother's searching gaze on you as you got lost in your thoughts for a second.
Lately, you needed to prepare more meals than ever before... The enforcers were looking for Jinx with every force possible and they didn't seem to care if the body they stepped over in the process happened to be a child's...
On top of that, it had been becoming a trend among the "lords" of the undercity to have children work in not just the factories but the mines as well. You heard stories how they'd even been kidnapping orphans to work for them and the thought honestly made you nauseous...
You were trying your best to help them. You brought them food whenever you could, and even learned to tend to wounds the traditional way... You weren't a natural-born medic (as funny as it sounded), but you had been getting better at fixing dislocated joints or sewing wounds closed with your own two hands...
You still felt like you were failing. Not just yourself but Ekko too. You promised yourself you'd try to hold everything together until he came back, but no one seemed to be taking you seriously... Especially since you kept repeating that the boy was still alive, making you look as if you'd lost your mind along with him and your powers.
Because no one believed anymore that Ekko could still be alive, after so many months passing. Raven already started painting the young firelight's portrait on top of the mural but you simply refused to look at it. It angered you how neither she nor Scar thought about the possibility that you could be right...
Maybe you were really going mad, but you still weren't as mad as Scar who was now seriously contemplating joining the movement that glorified Jinx out of all the people in Zaun...
After her last, colorful show in Piltover, she became a symbol in the undercity and you would have understood the sentiment if her father (and herself as well) weren't the literal reason behind the misery of so many.
No. No matter how hard you tried, you couldn't forget about your parents and how they'd still be walking on this Earth if it weren't for Silco. Your brother would still be healthy...
And you couldn't forgive Scar for wanting to join whatever Jinx was planning (or not) either, bringing most of the firelights with himself. You weren't sure anymore how would have Ekko acted in a situation like this but you had the feeling that he wouldn't have completely forgotten about all the people out there who still needed the help.
"Where..." Neo broke the silence but he had to pause to find his words and you looked at him with a patient smile. Speaking was still a little hard for him, but he had been improving quickly since you spent all your free time in his company. "Where is your... mind?" he asked in the end and your heart ached sadly as you shook your head.
"I was just zoning out," you smiled at him as confidently as possible but the way his eyes - that were way less purple now, and more of their original colours - were searching your face told you that he didn't believe you. You still didn't want to burden him with all these problems when he needed to focus on getting better. He must had been probably tired of helping you for long hours by now. "I should go soon," you said to change the subject as you pushed yourself away from the table and hanged the bag, filled with the meals, over your chest.
