For a second, you stared blankly at Ekko. Your mind was too numb to understand where his indignance came from, and you seriously needed a little time to realize that he did meet Rei in that parallel reality... He saw him with you, heard you talk about him, knew who he was to you in that other life, and a slight tint of sudden guilt rushed through you.

You blinked and massaged your eyes, reminding yourself that you never had anything happening between you and Rei. Every sudden feeling came from your connection to your other self that you always shook off as fast as possible... And the other you - well, she was a different person with a different life... No, it couldn't even be compared to what Ekko did to you, because it was really him with Jinx on that night and not just some other, unaware version of him...

"Do you really think you have any right to get upset about him?" you asked with a tired heart and a bitter frown.

Ekko's head turned back to you, with the puckers around his nose deepening.

"I think I have every right to be upset about him... Why is he here? With you?" he asked one more time and you immediately scoffed.

"He was here when I needed him, unlike you..." You gathered your strength to stand up from the ground, but to your greatest annoyance, Ekko also stood up simultaneously.

"I came back as soon as I could..." he said but that sentence immediately pissed you off. You were begging him not to even go there that night... He just had to listen to you for once...

"Oh, I'm so sorry you had to leave your perfect life behind." You pointed at his chest bitterly, and he raised his eyebrows in an instant. "You know what? I wish I could somehow exchange this life for that, too. I would still have all my family, and I would have never met you..." you said, trying to blink away the tears of your frustration that had started burning your eyes.

"Y/N, just let me explain myself... Please," Ekko grabbed your wrist gently and you sighed. Your eyes fell onto Neo's portrait one more time, and you felt so, very exhausted. The last thing you wanted was to listen to excuses, especially since there was nothing to explain...

He still loved her. It was as easy as that...

"I don't have the energy for this..." You snatched your hand out of his, just when Rei finally walked up to the two of you...

"Am I interrupting something?" he asked, scratching the back of his neck uncomfortably as his eyes jumped between the two of you. "I can come back later..." he started, but Ekko cut him off.

"Yes, in fact, you are interrupting something." he turned to face him, and you felt your anger growing, tightening your chest. He had absolutely no right to get upset...

"No, Rei, I'm done talking," you said, rather to Ekko, but it seemed like he didn't pay attention to you.

"What are you even doing here?" The young firelight gestured around himself.

Rei was searching your face for a second before he turned back to Ekko. You noticed his brows knotting for the first time since you met him as he watched your reactions, and his expression hardened.

"I'm here because I just buried her brother..." he replied quietly and his words, and the reality they brought with them, hit you like a train...

You felt all your anger deflating inside you in just a blink as, up until this point, your mind didn't fully want to comprehend the fact that your brother was gone.

You knew he was dead. You felt it. And yet, until hearing that his body now had been buried as well, there was still some morbid, pointless, false hope inside the back of your mind that he could still be out there somewhere...
