Your hands were still shaking. Your mind kept replaying the moment they glitched, and you had to admit that you were scared. Terrified even. You wanted to believe that you were only imagining your body literally falling apart for a second, but you knew what you saw - and felt.

You tried your fingers to see if they still worked as they should, and gladly acknowledged that you could still clench them into a fist. That was a good sign after all, right?

You sighed, leaning back against the windowsill and your eyes fell onto the Z-drive. Its peaceful, bluish aura was the only source of light in Ekko's room but instead of soothing you, it made you even more frustrated. He should have taken it with him... Just in case.

"I won't need it," he shook his head as he put on his coat. You were sitting on his bed, still dizzy from whatever happened to you a few hours earlier, watching Ekko get ready to leave.

"How can you be so sure?" You asked quietly. Your voice was still hoarse and your whole body felt sore but the uncomfortable cold feeling was the worst of all...

"The lab we are sneaking into is technically Heimerdinger's," Ekko explained and you noticed the amused twinkle in his eyes. You knew that he'd grown to like the professor in the past months. When he helped the boy stabilize the Z-drive he also sort of became his mentor.

"Then why would you even need to sneak in, in the first place?" You furrowed your brows in your slight confusion and Ekko chuckled a little at that, which also made you smile at him weakly.

"Wasn't my idea..." he shrugged and then sat down next to you. He gently tugged a strand of yours behind your ears and then leaned his forehead against yours. "I'm going to find out what the hell is going on with you and the tree and get that thing out of you..." he said, determined, but you shook your head.

"Focus on the tree, I'm going to be alright," you lied to him, trying to force a reassuring smile onto your lips as your gaze fell onto the Z-drive one more time.

Ekko insisted on going without any weapons, saying that with Heimerdinger by his side, nothing wrong could happen to them anyway. You wanted to believe him and his confidence but you hadn't been able to ignore the stupid feeling inside your stomach. Not even for a second.

Your legs were restless as your eyes kept jumping back to the round entrance of the Firelight base.

You expected the huge door to finally start rumbling any moment as it rolled to the side to show Ekko's and the professor's figure stepping through - but the door was motionless. And the nervous lump in your throat grew bigger and bigger...

It was dark already when they left, and despite being exhausted, you didn't even try to fall asleep - you were sure you wouldn't be able to rest a second until Ekko came back anyway.

Because he would come back. He promised. And you wanted to believe him so badly...

"He promised..." you whispered to yourself in the complete silence and frustrated from being so goddamn helpless, you stood up from the window in a sudden movement. You started towards the door but then realized there was nothing to do at such a late hour and you halted in your movements.

Your mind concentrated on the cold feeling again and you felt the hair unpleasantly reach towards the sky on your nape. A shiver ran through you and you needed to take huge breaths to be able to keep your stomach in place.

You felt helpless. Useless even as you so often did lately. You hated that you always felt like a burden - a problem to solve - to the people closest to you. Even when you tried to help, you kept causing bigger problems for everyone than before...
