All the hairs on your nape stood towards the sky as you dodged the firelights with a trembling stomach. No matter who you looked at - Prowl, Raven... Scar.... anyone - you felt the same growing coldness gripping your insides, making you feel like you were walking through a cemetery...

But was it really possible that soon, everyone would be...?

You shook your head, desperately trying to eliminate the thought, but it was so hard. Every single time you had the same feeling before, something terrible happened...

Maybe it was nothing like the previous occasions... There wasn't a single person around you who wouldn't have made you feel that coldness, and you were wildly trying to convince yourself that it was only your nerves giving up this time.

All the things that had been happening lately probably took their toll on you, and you were hopefully just losing your mind...

That or everyone around you would be dead soon...

"Why aren't you with the kids?" you asked when you finally reached Rei's lone figure, waiting for you at the entrance of the base. Your heartbeats were uncomfortably fast as you searched his face with a tightening chest.

"Don't worry, they're all out of the city..." he started, but you shook your head, interrupting him right away.

"No... why aren't you with them?" You asked again, and after a few seconds of confusion, the boy finally realized what you meant.

"Well..." he sighed. "I'm only here to check up on you before I go up... They are handing out weapons and giving some basic combat training in Piltover, and I don't want to miss it..." he admitted, itching the back of his head, and you felt your heart sink into your stomach. And again, the same, cold feeling as well...

"You want to stay here... and... fight?" you asked as all the blood left your face. Your voice was weak and almost too quiet amidst the busy sounds of the firelights, all preparing around you...

You didn't know why you were so surprised... You knew Rei was too honest to ever turn his back on a matter like this... At least his other self from your memories was...

Even your Rei stayed in the mines only because he wanted to help the kids there.

It was just that your stupid heart made you hope for the least possible outcome ever, as it usually did. Damn it, you had to learn to always expect the worst...

"Well, I guess, it's the right thing to do," the boy shrugged a little, and your shoulders fell forward as you looked away from his eyes.

"I don't give a damn about what's right or wrong anymore..." you replied barely audible as you pinned your gaze onto a smudged coal patch on his jacket. Your cheeks were burning in your shame because you selfishly wanted him to save himself and never even look back, so that you knew that at least he was safe. Deep down, maybe, you even wanted to leave with him...

What was the point in trying to always act right anyway? It wasn't that life rewarded you for trying so far...

"Then why do you stay?" Rei asked after a few seconds of silence, the corner of his lips softly pulling toward a smile. But when your eyes met his, you could see the sadness and worry hiding under his pretended lightness, and you tiredly frowned instead of forcing yourself to smile with him.

"Why do you always have to be so clever?" you rolled your eyes weakly, and it was you this time who made the boy chuckle. And as you watched him honestly laugh, for a brief second, you felt the weakest traces of warmness fumble inside your chest... After such a long time, what was so natural to you a year ago, felt so alien now...
