"Can't she do it for you?" You looked at him in disbelief. Did he seriously want you to pierce his ears? Now?
"I honestly would never trust anybody stabbing me with anything apart from you..." he chuckled weakly and you stared at him for a few seconds, without words. You were preparing for war, and this was his top priority...? In the end, the only reason you decided you'd help him was that you were kind of afraid they'd use the needle without trying to clean it up first... You sighed and stepped out of the way, slightly opening your door a little wider.
"You know that I can't heal anymore, right? I can't ease the pain or anything..." You said as he walked past you, sitting down at the edge of your bed as comfortably as always and your stomach turned for that, because for you, it wasn't so easy to forget everything...
"I know..." he replied quietly as you walked up to him after closing your door. You reached your hand out for the needle, which he handed you over, searching your face. You took it from him and stepped to your table to ignite your old oil lamp, using its small, dancing flame to disinfect the needle as best as you could. Keeping it there for a few seconds, you let your eyes rest on the sight.
"She likes earrings?" you asked after a minute of silent thinking and you saw from the corner of your eyes how his shoulders tensed.
"No," he answered without hesitation and you scoffed to yourself. As if you'd ever believe that... When you pulled the needle out of the flames, its end was already darkened from the heat. "I liked them... My other self had these fancy, golden rings..." he started speaking as you sat down beside him.
"You were all fancy over there..." you replied quietly. "And skinnier," you added, shrugging and Ekko chuckled at that.
"Yeah... I couldn't even lift a single box properly..." he tried his muscles and you rolled your eyes, almost smiling.
Feeling the warmness his body emitted now stirred a herd of emotions inside your mind. You longed to feel it - to let yourself get lost in it as you did so many times before when his presence was your only comfort. Because you needed comfort now, maybe more than ever before... But you also hated how it reminded you of them, once again...
"Our other selves had it way easier..." he sighed, and you hummed in agreement because, with that statement, you couldn't argue. "No fighting, no dying, and all the food and sleep in the world..."
"I can't even imagine living a life as easy as that..." You watched the needle pinched between your thumb and index fingers. "My biggest problem was having to study or sneaking boys over for the night... Arguing with my brother about little things..." you added smiling to yourself as your heart sank.
"But we never knew each other," Ekko said in a low voice looking at you carefully and you weakly furrowed your brows, scoffing to yourself.
"You're saying that as if it was a bad thing," you replied, still strictly keeping your eyes on the needle, rolling it slightly from time to time and trying to ignore the painful knot on your stomach. You didn't like where this conversation was going.
"Why are you here, Ekko?" you blurted out, just to get this over with, instead of having dumb and pointless small talks. "Because I'm sure she could have done this for you without any problems..." you stood up from beside him and dropped the needle onto your table, next to the oil lamp.
Ekko looked after you desperately as you stood in front of him, brushing through your hair with a hand in your frustration. He was thinking for a second before he started speaking, and you needed to look away because the expression he wore broke your heart.
