You exploded - or at least you definitely felt like you did.
Though it was much smaller than the first time with Scar, barely just a push compared to that. Yet it was more than enough to kick back Rei - making him fall from his chair, with his fingers still clasped around your wrist...
He pulled you after himself and you tripped over your own legs so unfortunately, that all you could do was let out a small scream of surprise as you hurtled down unstoppable. You both grunted as you arrived on top of the boy, trying to keep your weight with your free hand leaning against his chest.
An arm of his wrapped around your back, almost as if he was trying to protect you from something. It also prevented you from climbing off of him...
You pushed yourself up as much as you could to look at Rei and your eyes met his surprised gaze. Your cheeks immediately warmed up as he was so close to you that his breath brushed the tip of your nose...
You swallowed as if it felt like it was the thousandth time you were looking into his eyes - and you needed to do something - anything - to keep your mind off the unwanted memories of your... your other self trying to flood your thoughts. Your heart was beating annoyingly fast already.
"Why did you do that?!" You asked, blinking after your gaze was locked onto his for a second too long. You tried to crawl off of him but his fingers were still unconsciously clenched around your wrist, keeping you in place.
"Why did I do what?" He asked almost indignantly as he looked at you in disbelief.
"You pulled me after you..." you grunted as you were desperately trying to struggle yourself free from his hold.
"I wasn't thinking I was just..." the boy paused, looking around. "What the hell even happened?" he asked, still trying to find the source of what pushed him away.
He didn't know it was you... That sort of explained his arm covering your back - he was indeed trying to protect you... Yet the unwanted closeness of Rei's body - and especially the way your stupid heart reacted to it - annoyed you and you felt the helpless tension build up inside your chest one more time, threatening with another outburst of your powers...
"It will happen again if you don't let go of me..." you grunted, hating how your face was getting hotter and hotter with each second spent under the boy's searching gaze. You saw his confusion slowly turn into suspicion, and a moment later, he finally withdrew his arms to let go of you.
"Wait... It was you?" he asked in a surprised tone, and you finally climbed off of him as fast as you could. The feeling of his touch was way too (pleasantly) familiar...
"It keeps happening..." you mumbled under your nose in your shame. "I never want to hurt anyone, it just... lately when I'm angry or scared it just goes off," you added as the image of Scar pulling away from your touch came into your mind. You blinked as the memory made your heart sadly twitch inside your chest and you were sure Rei would react the exact same way.
Everyone probably would... Except for maybe Ekko. He would try to find out what was wrong with you, even if that meant running straight into danger to find a solution, no matter how many times you'd told him that you didn't need him to do that...A bitter frown laid along your features as you remembered how you begged him not to go with Heimerdinger either that night...
For a few seconds, Rei remained silent and you felt a growing, nervous knot forming on your trembling insides. He sat up, dusting off his clothes without a word and you didn't even dare to look his way. You were sure he would also look at you as if you were just a freak and you didn't want to see yet another pair of eyes filled with fear when he looked at you...
"Then we just need to make sure I don't anger you again..." the boy suddenly said, almost jokingly as his long fingers brushed through his dark strands and you finally looked at him in your surprise.
"Wait..." you furrowed your brows, unsure. "You're not... afraid of me?" You asked searching his face in disbelief. But the way his eyes shone made you believe he was honest. You even noticed a playful smile hiding in the corner of his lips.
"Afraid?" He asked, almost chuckling. "No offense, sincerely, but the kids at the mines hit bigger than whatever you just did before..." he shrugged simply. That was the last answer you'd ever expected. In other circumstances, you were sure you would have been offended by that, but at that moment you felt so relieved, and even grateful, that you started laughing.
For the first time in almost a year, you were honestly laughing from the bottom of your heart, so hard that you felt your tears escaping from your eyes.
And as those tears started flowing down your cheeks your laugh slowly turned into unstoppable crying...
You let it all out. Everything that had been bottled up inside you, starting from the day you tried to heal the tree - all your fears, worries, pain, and guilt... It all burst out of you and you were unable to stop your tears, but you weren't even trying, after all...
And Rei just sat next to you, waiting for you to finish crying without a word. He didn't try to comfort you, neither with words nor with unwanted touches or stupid bits of advice - he didn't even ask you anything, even though you were sure he had hundreds - and that was all you needed at that moment.
To finally be able to let your guard down without being scared of anyone offering you any solutions that you didn't need. To be able to just let yourself be weak in front of someone without being scared of you turning into just another problem to solve for the people closest to you...
And you were so, very grateful for that.
"It's..." you started but a sudden hiccup interrupted you. You waited a few more seconds, trying to wipe off your tears to be able to at least open your eyes. Rei was searching your face with a patient and calm expression, waiting for you to be able to form your words as he curiously searched your face. "It's Y/N..." You finally managed to mumble your name and for that, the boy's lips curled into a barely noticeable, soft smile.
