Kayla came waltzing back to the living room and brought not just my phone but also a charger. "Your phone's dead. Idiot." She said as she threw my phone to me, and it was a miracle that I was able to catch it with my clumsy hands. "Charge it first." And again without warning, she threw the charger straight to my face, this time I know my hands are a few seconds too late. So I closed my eyes and waited for the impact, but Don easily caught it with one hand.
"Careful. We don't want another black-eye." He simply said to Kayla, and handed me the charger. Kayla just rolled her eyes and went back to the lab.
"Thanks." I said to him.
"There's a plug under the table." He said while cleaning up. He also took my now cold noodles, and half-empty can of beer. "You're done right?" He asked me before going back to the kitchen, and I simply nodded.
Now I'm having second thoughts whether to hate this guy or not. I know he's been kind of a jerk but he does have some good qualities. I remember someone say that, it's not fair to only focus on the mistakes and disregard the things that the person had done right.
It's like I'm ignoring the moral scale. The good qualities has more weight over the bad ones. Yet sometimes I tend to switch things up, and focus on the one that's on top, which is the lighter one –the bad one.
So, I'm not simply going to judge them yet for what I see now. I can't truly know a person for just being with him/her for a few hours. Wow. I'm shocked at how mature I sound. Maybe I learned my lesson when I met Tristan. I judged him based on our first meeting, but later found out that he's actually a nice guy behind those cold-smug-arrogant facade he always puts up.
I heard a clicking sound, when I looked up it was Don staring at me, with amusement written all over his face. "Wow. It seemed like you just traveled to some spiritual place." He paused. "So what were you thinking?" He asked.
"Many things." I told him the truth, well, in general that is.
He sighed. By the look on his face, it seems like his patience for me had just reached its expiration date. "And I thought I have someone decent to talk to." He sighed. "You're the same as Kayla." He slouched on the sofa.
"I'm sorry." I paused. Why do I suddenly feel sorry? "It's just..." I stopped I can't seem to finish my sentence with all this thoughts in my head.
I know I'm too soft! Gosh I should change my name to Marshmallow or Boobs.
"I understand. It's not easy to trust us after what we did, and said." He paused. "But we really need you. I may regain my father's name if I finish this unsolved case of his." He looked up the high ceiling and sighed. Desperation is oozing out of him.
So his father was also a hunter and the case was passed on to him...
Now I understand why he seems so desperate to hand me over to the council. He had good intentions, well, for his father that is but not mine. It was a good thing that Kayla fought on what she thought was right. Because if not, I'd probably end up in a dungeon. Wait, do they still do it the olden days? Or they probably have cells with TV's now. But if he did hand me over, that will put another taint, well, not just on his father's name but also to his. Because if justice is served on their – I mean our – world, the council will know I'm innocent.
"What do you mean by I'm the same as Kayla?" I asked curiosity got the best of me and my pride. I'm now actually ready to have a casual conversation with this stupid donkey.
"Kyla or well the people around me in general, look down on me. For they think I'm the same as my father, a disappointment. The council didn't trust me well enough to handle this case alone, so they sent Kayla, like my babysitter." He ranted. Maybe he had no one to talk to with all this pent up emotions.
