Peeling? Done!
Straining? Done!!
Pureeing? Now done!!!
Sure, it's been a while since the woman took some time to make actual dishes for herself or since she watched Sanji cook for the crew, but damn. Y/n really forgot how much work it is!
"There! Finally got 'em all pureed!"
"My arm is killing me..."
Leaning onto the counter next to Yuuken, they watch the ADeuce duo complain and groan.
"Nice work. It'll all be the sweeter for your pain!"
Trey is doing a good job at keeping the mood up, and Grim is practically floating towards the smell, ready to dig in.
"I just need to add butter and sugar to the chestnut paste, and a sensible splash of oyster sauce — that's my secret ingredient!"
Standing upright at this, Y/n raises a brow at him. Her mouth moves to open, but closes when Trey shoots her a subtle wink.
"Oyster sauce?!"
Ace and Deuce shout, causing Y/n to tilt her head away, hiding her growing smile. Nodding, Trey continues the lie,
"Yep. The umami of the oysters gives the cream a deep, savory flavor. I use this one here: Walrus-brand Young Oyster Sauce. All the best bakers use it in their tart."
'He sure is dedicated to the bit, heh!'
The freshmen exchange a look of surprise, unsure how to proceed. This is their first time making tarts, but oyster sauce? Deuce asks,
"Really? But isn't oyster sauce like, super salty?"
"Some folks put chocolate into curry, don't they? Maybe it's the same idea."
Ace tries justifying, but before any of them can try to make the logic work, laughter interrupts them.
"I'm totally lying! No one in their right mind would put oyster sauce into a pastry.",
Trey admits, still laughing along with Y/n.
"What?! So you were just yankin' our chain?"
"You didn't seriously think any SWEET pastry had oyster in it, did you Ace?"
Asking with a grin, the Devil Fruit user walks up to them. Trey digs into Ace more,
"Ah ha ha! I mean, if you'd used your brain, you'd have realized how ridiculous it was! Let that be a lesson to you. Don't believe everything you hear."
There's nothing Ace can say to defend himself, so he joins Yuu's side and grumbles. Unamused, Grim also scoffs at Treys little deception,
"Feh. And here I thought that human was actually somewhat decent."
The laughter dies down and Trey rummages through the ingredients,
"Next, I'll put in the cream... Oh!"
Trey shuffles around some of the bottles and carton, his expression growing more concerned and almost panicked by the second. Ace asks what's wrong.
"You guys gathered so many chestnuts that we may have overdone it with the chestnut paste.",
Looking over the amount of ingredients they do have, Trey sighs,
"I don't think we have enough cream to mix in."
As kind as ever, Deuce offers to go and buy some, and asks if it's sold at the school store. Confirming that they do, Trey takes the opportunity to ask,
"Can I have you pick me up a few other things? I need two cartons of milk, two packs of eggs, some muffin cups, five cans of fruits..."
Hearing the shopping list grow longer, Deuce turns to Yuuken,
"I don't think I'll be able to carry all that back. Yuu, could you come with me?"
The Prefect takes a few second to think about it,
"I don't think I've seen the schools store yet. Sure, I'll go."
"Then I'm comin' too!",
Just as the two start to leave, Grim jumps on the Prefect,
"I'm getting dizzy from all this stirrin'. I need a break!"
Laughing softly at his antics, Y/n considers joining them, but decides not to in the end. It shouldn't take them too long to return and she can always visit the schools store another time. In the meantime the three remaining students start cleaning, as suggested by Trey.
Stuck with washing the dishes, Ace hands a few clean utensils for Y/n to dry off, while Trey puts everything they no longer need away. Drying of a whisk, the Devil Fruit user offhandedly mentions,
"If it hadn't been for your previous run ins with trouble, I would have told you to fight it out with Riddle."
The two whip back to look at her, taken by surprise. Ace drops the fork he was holding back into the sink,
"Wait, seriously?!"
"Yeah, but not cuz I think you'd win. I just think you should fight for what you believe is right."
"Aaand there it is."
Ace can feel an irk mark forming at her words. Frustration would be a good way to describe what he's feeling, but they're so close to being done with this whole ordeal he let's it go and resumes washing the dishes.
Trey, done with his tasks, helps Y/n dry the dishes but slows down. It takes him a bit to think over what he wants to tell her. He knows that so far he hasn't made the best impression by defending Riddle when they first met, but if there's a way to do right by both sides, he needs to take it.
"I know you wanted to take a different approach, but thanks for trying our way first. I promise I'll make it up to you."
There's a nervousness to his tone, mismatching the confident smile he offers the women. Roughly patting him on the back, Y/n leans back on the counter,
"Don't worry about it. But at the same time I WILL be coming to you whenever I wants baked goods.",
She points an accusatory finger at Trey,
"And you better deliver!"
Sounding a bit too serious, Trey doesn't think she's joking and accepts his fate. Not that he was going to deny her request in the first place.
"Great. And what do I get for all my work?"
A perfect moment to bud in, Ace looks at his upperclassmen expectantly, arms crossed as he taps his shoe.
"You get the opportunity to apologize to your Housewarden."
Being laughed at by Y/n right after is a betrayal he expected, but damn. At least Grim and Deuce aren't here to laugh at him too. Sick of being dissed left and right, he drops everything back into the sink.
"Deuce and Yuuken can clean the rest!"
'Yeesh, so easily angered all the time! He needs to relax.'
Watching Ace stomp over to a chair and occupy himself with the glowy box, it's official they won't get any more work done for now.
The woman tilts her head at Trey,
"... So what do you recommend from your bakery?"
Having asked the right questions, Trey delves right into it. Their specialties, best sellings and what his personal favorites are, he spares no details as Y/n listens intently.
Behind them, Ace texts Deuce to hurry up. At the lack of a response, he's a bit confused before it's replaced by mild annoyance. How occupied can Deuce be to not check his phone? It's slowly starting to feel like he's a third wheel with how intensively Y/n and Trey are discussing pastries, and he's starting to regret not going to the store too.
