Daughter of Hades
Chapter 5 -Secrets Aren't for Sharing-
[Sarah's P.O.V.]
-
I stared at the sketch thinking of ways to avoid the next sentence that had to come out of my mouth. I liked Nico and I trusted Nico but I wasn't ready to trust him with...with this. This was my closest guarded secret, I'd never even gotten the chance to tell my mother. No one knew but me. This was too sudden and for once in my life I wasn't in control of the situation.

I shrugged. "No reason."

SARAH YOU IDIOT! I mentally slapped myself. 'No reason' yeah, haha, he'll defiantly take that answer and drop the question.

Nico continued to stare at me. "Sarah, tell me." The emotion behind his eyes changed. They seemed to hold a guarded emotion...hope. Nico was hopeful, but it was the kind of hope that is fragile, the kind people expect to be crushed.

"It isn't exactly your business, now is it?" I snapped and snatched my sketchbook out of his hands. I stuffed it in my bag and stabbed my pancakes with my fork.

Nico took a deep breath and looked over at Thalia. "Out of everyone you could've drawn, why pick her? Why does she deserve a spot in your book of dreams, memories, inspirations, and visions?"

"Wonderful description of a sketchbook." I complemented. "But it really is nothing, she was the easiest person to draw." I shrugged again and took the last bite of pancake.

"I don't buy that for a second." Nico said.

I turned. "Then why don't you just say it then? Huh? Stop tiptoeing around and ASK me the question I KNOW is sitting on the tip of your tongue!" I snapped.

Nico took a deep breath. "I think you drew her because you like her."

"Well..." I thought for a moment before standing up and grabbing my bag. "You're not wrong."

I stormed out of the cafeteria without looking back.

I sat on my bunk staring at the drawing of Thalia. I remembered how Nico knew the others, how he knew Jason and wondered if he was telling them all right now.

I heard a knock on the door and jumped a little. "Who is it?" I asked. I hoped it was just a teacher. No such luck.

"Me." Nico's voice came softly through the door.

"What do you want?" I asked.

"Right now? To come in." Nico said from behind the door. I shut my sketchbook.

"You have my permission to enter." I sighed.

The door creaked slowly open and Nico awkwardly stepped in. "Anything I shouldn't be seeing in here?" He asked.

"No." I said and Nico closed the door behind him. He scanned the room for a second before locking eyes with me. "You sure have a knack for melting into the shadows." He told me and climbed the bunk. I moved over so he could sit across from me.

"Yeah." I said. "Why are you here?"

"To talk." Nico said. "I didn't mean to upset you in the cafeteria I just...I just really needed to know."

"Why? Why does it matter to you what I am?"

Nico looked down for a second. "I thought for a moment that...well if you were that way...well...I hoped you were so I wouldn't feel so...alone."

The words hit me like a bomb. I stared at him silently for a few moments thinking about what he'd just confessed to me. Suddenly his behavior made sense, the way he always stared at Percy...
