The hospital staff whispered about her, worried for the girl who never left his bedside, the girl whose eyes had lost their light. Guilt clawed at her insides, regret eating her alive. Why hadn't she told him sooner? Why had she waited until he was slipping away to admit what was in her heart all along?

And then one day, the news came to her first. One of the hospital staff who had seen Elizabeth in her state, had relayed the news to her first so she could go.

Maximilian had woken up.

Hope flared in her chest so suddenly it hurt. She didn't think, she just ran. Her feet carried her down the halls, faster than they ever had before. She needed to see him, needed to hear his voice. She can tell him later, but she needed to see him.

But the director's words stopped her cold.

"He's awake, but..." The doctor hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "He doesn't respond to anything. It's as if we brought back a corpse with no soul. He must already be crossing the sea now."

Elizabeth's stomach dropped.

No.

"What do you mean cross the sea?" She held her breath tight.

"He left a long time ago, I'm afraid you're too late. He left just 20 minutes ago." The Doctor told her in disappointment.

No.

But she needed to see him. She needed to speak to him. Her feet started running before her mind told her to. She knew where she was going. She's going to try to catch that boat, and she's not letting him go. Elizabeth wiped her tears as she ran through the middle of the streets. She bumped into random passserby's that shouted at her for running recklessly in the streets. But that didn't stop her. Her life was on the line, he was her life.

When she arrived at the docks, there were so many people around, where would she find him among all these people? She looked and searched through each boat, looking carefully at each person that passed her by.

She was running circles, and she didn't know where to find him. Please,

Please,

Please come back.

She spun in circles, the world around her bleeding into a blank white sheet that didn't show anything of importance to her. Her life was just an irrelevant blank white sheet of paper, that she could ruin with dark black ink.

"Maximillian!" She called out relentlessly. The crowd around her broke out into whispers of gossip, calling her crazy, a fool, a witch maybe. But she didn't care about any of that.

Then she saw it. Streaks of silver bouncing through the crowd, making its way past them all and into the middle. Maximilian emerged through, his eyes locking onto Elizabeth, then looked away. But just for a moment, she saw something slip in and slip out of his eyes. He was scared.

Maximilian went the other way, and was about to board a ship. He was walking faster than usual, being quiet than usual. He could hear Elizabeth walking after him, calling out for him. But he wasn't responding.

"Maximillian!" He heard right before he set foot into the boat. For some reason he stopped, and took back his step. He stood there, as if waiting for her to finish what she wanted to say. Elizabeth felt her heart beat again, her white blank paper wasn't just blank anymore it was filled with him. A beautiful picture of him.

"Please, can we talk." She pleaded.

When Maximillian looked back, there was not a single ounce of mercy in his eyes. And she was afraid looking at them, but it is entirely justifiable why he is that way. She couldn't look longer into his threatening eyes and her gaze dropped to the ground.
