The ball had ended shortly and everyone had left at different times. The servants were busy cleaning up the space leisurely as I told them they can take their time. But I want it done by tomorrow morning. I didn't care that my voice was angry and mean.
I wasn't bothered by that. Instead I was bothered as to why my wife was meeting Roman secretly without me knowing. I have no knowledge of this and that was enough for me to feel the anger rise to my head. I'm getting irritated now as my brain is fuming with anger.
I walk up to my office room, where I asked her to meet me. I should ask her straight away. I should not hold back at all.
My hand finds itself into my pocket as I open the door and find the Elizabeth sitting inside already. She goes over the papers and contents on my table slowly. Carefully.
She turns at the sound of my appearance and sets the papers down. "You said you wanted to speak to me?" She says quietly.
I nod. Making my way to my seat behind the table and opposite from her. Taking my time to adjust myself. I look at her a little longer to notice the fear that flashes through her eyes.
She's scared.
"You must know what I'm going to question you about. But I'll ask anyways." I lean back in my chair and throw my leg over the other, crossing them one over the other. Showing that I have power and control here.
"How long have you been meeting Roman? Why were you meeting him?" He stands up now, nearing her slowly as he makes his way to her. "Why did you keep it a secret from me? And why did you think it was Roman that came after you? Why not me? Or someone else? Why Roman?" The name Roman was now making me feel bitter.
I shove my hands into my pocket and stare down at her when I reach her, awaiting her answer. She's thinking. Analyzing me first. I can always tell what she does with those blue eyes of hers.
A moment of blank silence. Nothing. I patiently wait for her answer as I want a precise answer and not a shabby one. I will wait.
She opens her mouth slowly, parting it. I watch her lips move closely. "Your Majesty, I deeply apologize." She's already bowing down low before me like she's committed a grave mistake. Now that irks me. Her face is one that is expressionless. As always.
"I lied to you. I thought you were a stranger and seeing that you, or the stranger you," she was having a hard time explaining herself. Avoiding my face. "Knew a lot about me, I thought you might be a stalker. So I lied to you about meeting with Roman many times. To see if he, er, you knew anything more about my life. I don't know, I wanted to test something." She spits out. Her eyes flick up to mine.
So she lied to me about meeting with Roman to test if I knew anything more? She operated in a different way than he thought. She was always thinking differently than what should've been done. She could take the hard and long way to a goal but still achieve it. Just in a different completely unexpected way.
It was as if every action she committed was put no effort in to the making. Sometimes. Other times, she is a dutiful empress that serves this land. I hate seeing that side of her. She's dedicated too much to being an empress.
I always heard from Johannes how Elizabeth trained day and night on the orders of his father. Duke Albrecht was already trying to make Elizabeth empress at such an age. No wonder she always seemed to be perfect.
I turn around and go back to my chair, smiling slightly at her antiques. Before that smile is gone completely and I take a seat. I sit with a regal posture, befitting of my stature and nobility. I was born to be regal.
"You may go now, My empress." I say, returning to my papers. At least what she said was a lie, but he still doesn't like Roman. Something about him and her together at the ball today had settled badly in his stomach. Like a bad appetite.
He has seen many things today.
I had caught her staring at Roman a little longer than I expected. I was leisurely sitting in my throne chair just moments ago, but after seeing such a sight, I sat straight. Watching her more carefully and where her eyes fall.
"Before I leave, I want to talk to you about something. Roman seems to have noticed that there are some rebellions occurring in the country. It seems the power is being unbalanced lately."
She informs him.
"I see. Then let's ask Roman to take care of that matter as soon as possible." Maximillian says, nodding as if confirming something.
"I will go do that." Elizabeth bows down before turning around to leave and go back to her room. He didn't seem to scream at her or argue with her this time. Usually he would just for the sake of it.
