Ji-an raised her sword-arm, the demon's eyes latched onto its violet light. She stepped toward the demon without a hint of hesitance. As the demon prepared to pounce, the sword's glow reflected off its shifting fur, illuminating streaks of the stone hallway.
Cale's eyes narrowed.
Ji-an swung, and as her sword path made contact with the demon, it bounced back at her faster than she could react. Cale immediately activated the Invincible Shield, trapping the demon and the attack within its power. He winced at the impact against his shield.
"Seriously? The first demon I come across is immune to my new technique?" Ji-an groaned.
"Only parts of it are immune." Cale dropped the Invincible Shield and leaned against the wall.
"What parts of it aren't?"
Cale didn't respond. She could figure that out on her own; he didn't want to have to feed everyone information for the rest of their time together.
"Do I need to aim for the joints, neck, belly...?"
Min Jung raised her hand. "I know! Your strike bounced off the fur, so you need to attack the mouth or the eyes!"
Si-Woo high-fived Min Jung's raised hand, and she grabbed his hand before he could pull it back, lacing their fingers together. They gazed into each other's eyes for a long moment, and Cale shifted to put them out of his field of vision.
Ji-an widened her stance, her shoes scuffing against the ugliest rug Cale had ever seen.
Her foot slipped.
She stumbled forward, and the demon pounced, its jaws wide.
Ji-an shot up, stabbing her mana-laced sword into the vulnerable flesh of the demon's mouth. She yanked her sword back, and the demon snapped its jaws shut, rearing its head back. Its eyes glazed over.
The demon fell to the floor, which shook from the impact. Tiny cracks spiderwebbed out from underneath the demon's carcass. In the sudden silence, violet light leaked between the metallic strands of its fur, illuminating Ji-an's face with an eerie glow.
"Wow!" U-Jin cheered. "You're so cool!"
Ji-an looked back and smiled, looking a little sheepish.
[The Bright Dawn Garden Dragon : Great kill!]
Si-Woo was beaming. "Did you really fake out that demon? I've never seen that in real life before, that was awesome! Man, I wish we knew each other before all this. It would have been so fun to play video games with you."
Ji-an grabbed the Demon's Proof and walked back to the rest of the group while shaking the blood off her sword-arm. She couldn't wipe it off because it had that weird three-bladed shape. "Yeah, maybe."
"Just maybe? I'm hurt," Si-Woo pouted.
"Don't worry, I'm always here to beat your ass when you want to play," Min Jung said.
Ra glared at Min Jung, who playfully stuck her tongue out at the grandma. Ra sighed.
As the two teens turned to squabble, Cale pushed himself off the wall and walked away from the group. His kids leaped into his arms. Now that he knew they could defend themselves, he could wander off and take a nap somewhere.
On looked up at him knowingly. Cale pretended to ignore her.
He was a couple steps away from being able to turn a corner when a loud gasp sounded behind him.
"Where are you going?" U-Jin shouted.
The little boy ran to Cale, whose arms were already full of children, and he skidded to a stop just before colliding with the exasperated man.
