St. Edmund's Hospital's hallways filled with white lights and the constant echo of hurried footsteps seemed to have remained unchanged in years. However, for Y/N, everything was different. After working in several medical centers, she was returning as a nurse to the place where, years ago, she had done her first internship as a student.
As she walked down the third-floor hallway, she passed the emergency room. Suddenly, she heard a familiar voice, deep and confident, giving quick instructions to the staff. She stopped in her tracks.
"Dr. Rivas, can you review this EKG?" a resident asked.
Y/N turned slowly. It was him.
Christian. Her coworker from her teenage years. Her friend through sleepless nights, instant coffee, and first aid. Also, her "almost something." He is now an emergency physician, looking more mature, with dark circles under his eyes that spoke of years of night shifts, but with that same intense gaze and smile she remembered so well.
"Y/N?" he asked, approaching with a mixture of surprise and joy.
"Hi, Chris. Wow, it's been a while."
"You've been gone too long," she replied, a smile creeping into her soul.
The days passed, and they began to coincide in shifts, clinical meetings, and even in the break rooms. Between patient stories, inside jokes, and shared memories, trust re-emerged, but now with the maturity of those who had lived beyond books.
They remained silent for a moment, gazing at the night sky from the hospital rooftop.
"Maybe... we could go for hot chocolate, now that we're no longer penniless students," Chris said.
Y/N looked at him, amused.
"Official invitation, Dr. Rivas?"
"Official and urgent," he replied.
She nodded.
"So... let's go back to where it all began."
Y/N and Christian walked under the starry sky to the small shop across from the hospital. It was small, with warm lights and that smell of sweet bread and reheated coffee that never changes over the years. They sat at the same old metal table, with their cups of hot chocolate and a couple of conchas.
"So... did you know I was going to find you here?" Y/N asked, blowing steam out of her mug."Not really. Although I confess... once a year I'd check for your profile on social media. I never found it. Or maybe you had blocked me," he joked.
"No, I just didn't use it. I became allergic to notifications," she said, laughing. "But you, do you remember when we worked together?"
Chris burst out laughing so hard she almost knocked over her mug.
