All I could think about was him. He was standing there, chatting with his friend while I was being bullied. He was handsome, taller than me, and completely out of my reach. Meanwhile, Michael was shaking my shoulders, hurling a bunch of offensive comments about gay people like me. Despite everything, I only had eyes for him. He seemed so... sincere.

Then he looked my way and pointed at me, snapping me back to reality just as Michael snatched my backpack. This wasn't the first time he'd done it; the only problem was my private notebook inside, filled with friend fiction about Kian.

"You fag, where's the math homework you won't share with me?" Michael sneered, yanking everything out of my backpack. My erotic friend fiction was in a safe place, but if he kept looking, he'd probably find it.

"Michael, aren't you tired?" I asked, and he paused as his friends loosened their hold on me.

"What are you talking about, you idiot?" he scoffed.

"You know, coming here every day to harass me just to find something I don't want to give you, and then making a whole scene out of it."

"Whatever, you freak!" He flipped my backpack upside down, scattering all my things on the floor before walking away. With a sigh, I knelt down and started to gather my stuff. Then, to my surprise, a few others joined in to help, including Kian. He helped me put my books back in my bag.

I reached for my notebook, but it flew open. Kian picked it up, his eyes scanning the page. I quickly snatched it from his hands and shoved it back in my bag.

"Why haven't you talked to the teachers about Michael?" he asked. "He's so mean and rude. There are plenty of anti-bullying campaigns at school."

I chuckled. "I know, it's just... I know he enjoys it, you know? And maybe I'm a masochist for bullies."

He laughed softly. "So, you do it for him?"

I nodded. "Yeah, his favorite part of the day is hunting me down for my homework."

"So why not just give it to him?" Kian asked. His green eyes made my stomach flip.

"I just... like the attention," I replied.

He chuckled again. "Well, if it ever gets to be too much, you can always tell me. I know I don't do much, but if you need some backup, I'm here."

I smiled at him, and he put a hand on my shoulder. His touch sent a wave of warmth through me, and I felt myself blush.

"I have to go, but thanks," I said, walking away, my heart pounding. I was stunned; I'd never had such a normal conversation with him before.

Usually, whenever I tried talking to him, it was a mess—a blur of me mumbling and acting like a shy, bumbling idiot.

I was glad at least this time it worked. I felt my phone buzz in my back pocket—it was an invitation to Michael's birthday party. No way was I planning to go.

Until...

Kian sent me a message. He never messaged me. That was suspicious.

KIAN
Hey, want to do something fun?

ME
What do you mean? I asked, still feeling suspicious.

KIAN
I have an idea for Michael's party. Want to help me?

ME
Depends. Will it involve pig's blood?

KIAN
NO! Just glitter.

ME
No.

KIAN
What? Why no glitter? 😢

I smiled.
