I could see my reflection in the blood on the ground. He was talking, but I couldn't hear him. He had his hand extended toward me, holding a heart. His eyes shone a burning orange, blood covered him, and two broken horns crowned his head.
I wanted to run, to move — but I couldn't.
I woke up with a gasp. I looked around the room and saw the time. It was late. The baby was kicking, and I needed to pee.
"Calm down, little one. I'm going to pee and then we'll eat."
After that encounter with Ace, fear still made me tremble. I had just run. I grabbed what I could and fled — didn't even tell my brother or his partner.
So many questions, so many thoughts. I packed my bag and kept moving, going nowhere. I didn't know if it was safe to stop.
Ace could be behind every move I made, watching me, hunting me, trying to kill me and the child in my womb. I was the only witness to the serial killer terrorizing my home.
Sitting in a booth at a diner, a waitress came to take my order. I noticed curiosity in her eyes.
"My husband's in the military. I'm on my way to surprise him," I said quickly.
She smiled softly and offered me dessert on the house.
The closer I got to my due date, the more I panicked. The contractions were coming more often. I was freaking out — mind and body both rebelling.
"At this point, I don't know if I'm stress-eating or actually hungry."
"Did you say something, hon?" the waitress asked as she brought my check.
"Just mom talk. I talk to myself a lot lately."
She chuckled. "When I was pregnant, I scared my husband half to death. I used to read creepy children's books when I couldn't sleep. You'll be with your husband soon, hon. It's okay."
I nodded, looking down at the map on the table — until a newscast caught my eye. It showed the picture of the man Ace had killed.
I had to get out of here. Now.
I threw some bills on the table, grabbed my bag, and waddled toward my car.
A contraction hit, making me clutch my belly. I climbed in, tossed my bag onto the back seat, and drove wherever the road led.
Night fell fast. My stomach growled, my back ached, and my feet throbbed. I pulled into a small motel and rented a room. After ordering room service, I finally stretched out on the bed.
"Ah, this is great. I need a massage and something fried with chocolate."
"That could be arranged."
"Oh my— fuck!" I tried to sit up, but it was harder than before.
"It's okay. Don't get up. Don't hurt yourself or the baby."
"H... how—how did you find me? What the fuck are you doing here, Ace? Don't come near me or I'll throw holy water or some shit!"
I grabbed whatever was close and started throwing it at him. He dodged easily.
"I know, I know. I'm not here to hurt you, I promise. I know you have questions, and I come in peace. I just want to talk, that's all. Please."
"Who the hell are you? What the hell are you? You killed that guy and ate his heart! You had horns, and a tail, and blood all over you! What in the seven circles of hell are you, and what do you want from me? I haven't told anyone, just let me go, I'll disappear, I—"
"Calm down, Y/N. I give you my word. Just let me explain. I promise I'll answer all your questions truthfully."
I sat frozen on the bed, wide-eyed, as Ace took a seat in the corner. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, and sighed.
"Before I came here, I was in Hell—as a demon. I know how it sounds," Ace began. "I was only supposed to mess with the living a little here and there. But I met someone who could see us, and I fell in love with her. As punishment, I was sent here and forced to watch her die from a human sickness.
