Pt3
It had been three weeks since the night at Vic's apartment. Somehow everything had gone back to normal.
At least on the surface.
Vic still acted like my boss during work hours. Professional. Distant. Careful.
But when no one was looking... her hand always seemed to find mine.
Small touches here and there. A hand brushes my waist as she walks past, her leg pressing lightly against mine under the table. Simple things, but they meant something.
She was conscious of our relationship, and in her own quiet way, she acknowledged it. But someone else had started to notice.
Sam.
And he wasn't happy. For more than one reason. I had become manager, and Vic and I were finally on good terms again.
Maybe he had a crush on her. Honestly, I didn't want to find out. I was happy, and right now that was all that mattered.
The dinner rush had finally started to slow down. The sound of plates clattering and cooks yelling orders filled the restaurant like usual.
I was behind the counter finishing some receipts when Vic leaned over my shoulder.
"You missed one," she said quietly, pointing at the screen.
Her hand rested on my lower back for just a second. Too quick for anyone to notice.
Except Sam.
I felt his eyes before I even looked up. He was leaning against the bar with that stupid half-smile he always had when he thought he had figured something out.
"Everything okay over there?" he asked.
Vic stepped back immediately. "Yeah. Just fixing a ticket."
Sam nodded slowly, but his eyes stayed on us a little too long. A few minutes later, Vic walked past me again, whispering, "Can you check the beer stock upstairs?"
I knew exactly what that meant. The storage room.
Again.
I tried to act normal as I headed for the stairs, but I could practically feel Sam watching me. Vic followed a minute later.
The storage room was quiet compared to the chaos downstairs.
Boxes stacked against the wall, the faint smell of cardboard and cleaning supplies filling the small space.
Vic closed the door behind her. "You're terrible at being subtle," I whispered.
She smiled. "You came anyway."
"Because you asked."
She stepped closer, resting her hands on the edge of the table behind me. "Just a minute," she said softly.
Downstairs, in the kitchen, one of the cooks frowned.
"Didn't the boss go upstairs?" The other cook nodded. "Yeah... and the manager too."
They looked at each other. Sam, who had been pretending to polish glasses, slowly raised an eyebrow.
"Huh," he muttered. A minute later one of the cooks climbed halfway up the stairs.
"Hey Vic, we're running low on—" The storage room door opened suddenly. Vic stepped out first.
I followed a second later, fixing my hair. The cook stared at both of us.
"...beer," he finished awkwardly.
Then he gave us a mischievous smirk. I reacted immediately, rushing toward him, covering his mouth with my hand and dragging him back inside the storage room.
