Carlos awoke with a start, the morning light painting his Auradon Prep room in hues of gold and rose. He sat up, the lingering echoes of dreams fading as the day's reality settled in. A complex mix of exhaustion and a subtle, persistent unease clung to him. He rose from the bed, the plush carpet a silent comfort beneath his feet. After dressing, he left his room, the quiet hum of the sleeping school a peaceful counterpoint to the turmoil of his thoughts.
The sun was already high in the Auradon sky, stretching long shadows across the meticulously manicured royal gardens. He found Mal there, their conversation already underway, their voices hushed with a shared intimacy and a hint of uncertainty. The air around them seemed to shimmer with unspoken questions about the path that lay ahead.
"So, you're wondering what our future holds," Carlos observed, his voice thoughtful, "beyond the happily-ever-after... the crown, the kingdom, and the imagined pitter-patter of three little feet?"
Mal turned to him, her expression a delicate blend of longing and a patient understanding. Her gaze, usually so vibrant, held a trace of wistfulness. "It's more than wondering, Carlos," she admitted softly. "It's... envisioning. Trying to see past the grand titles and the royal duties, to the us in all of it."
She paused, then offered a small, hopeful smile. "Maybe we could be the slightly eccentric, but much-loved aunt and uncle to Evie and Jay's kids? The ones who spoil them rotten and tell them all the best stories about the Isle?"
He smiled, hopeful of a future of being an uncle. "Yeah, I'd like that"
