"Come here dressed in black now, so it goes, scratches down your back now, so it goes..."

|Theodore Abbott |

I watch drunkenly, eyes blurry as Nova staggers to the stage. Her steps slow, hips swaying.

Someone on stage hands her the bass and she takes it, plucking a string and looking at it as if reuniting with an old friend.

After a few words between her and the singer, she stands in front of the mic stand. The guy speaks into his mic, "Nova here is going to sing " He winks at someone in the crowd.

The beat kicks in slow and steady. Then her voice slides across the room like honey and gasoline.

"Love, I said real love is like feelin' no fear When you're standing in the face of danger 'cause you just want it so much..."

I blink. It's not perfect. She's not a popstar. But the point is she meant it. Every. Single. Word. She sang it like the lyrics were stitched into her ribcage.

The crowd sings along, really, really loud. And I watch her sink into the feeling.

Eyes slightly closed, chest rising up and down and goddamn that dress. All I wanted was to rip it off her.

Whoa. Slow down, tiger. I down the drink in my hand.

"Touch me hard enough to feel it, suck the air out of my lungs and leave me breathless..."

I wish.

Her voice breaks a little at the end and its supposed to be embarrassing but she owns it, it felt pretty hot. The crowd goes silent, as if holding a breath.

"Darlin' darlin' darlin' I fall to pieces when I'm with you I fall to pieces– yeah my cherries and wine rosemary and thyme and all of my peaches...are ruined.."

I can't move. I can't look away. I'm...struck.

She's not trying to be cool or hot but she just is. Her eyes close as her fingers strum the bass, her hair falling in front of her face but she doesn't bother fixing it.

Nova's in a different world, a state in which I've never seen her before.

And I'm standing still, wondering how the hell I thought I could handle her.

When the song ends, the crowd goes wild. The singer behind her laughs and throws an arm around her.

"Alright, Nova. Think everyone likes you too much, one more?" He smirks.
