Grey eyes squinted as a veiny hand moved the rock, effectively destroying his opponent's knight. "Don't laugh too soon" Zabini said as his own rock went after the queen. Malfoy just smirked, they had played two games already and without effort, he'd won. There was no reason for this one to be any different. Fourteen minutes later, the blond called checkmate, his friend huffing, irritated.
The common room had been his new hanging place for the past three days. "Fine, enough chess" Zabini spoke, bored, "Let's get out of this place". However, the blond ignored his words, his head only raising when a voice he knew very well was heard. The owner entered not a minute later, besides the two fourth years that seemed to be glued to her these past three days.
No words, he did not approach nor did she. It was irritating and it was unnecessary, but like hell if one was willing to approach first. They both glanced at each other, but willed themselves not to stare to not make the other aware. It was driving Zabini and Nott mad. Malfoy was not bearable like this, and the proud prick did not want to go apologise. When they arrived Monday night at their dorm, the first thing he did was ask them about Lestrange and Phelps. Veins tensing when they told him she requested to talk to him, of course, she had not listened to him, then again, when does she?
In his mind, if he went about and she saw him, she'd think he went looking for her. It was safer for his honour to stay there, whether she came or went, he would simply be in the common room, no space for assumptions.
"We have four days left, come on mate" Blaise said, it was really bothering him how he'd been behaving about the whole argument thing. "You go if you want" His friend voiced, beginning a new game already.
Due to Blaise's insistence, he would refrain from associating with Phelps until school ended. Next term is another story. His friend had been right when he told him fighting with the fourth-year would only strain this even more. Draco didn't see it though, at least if he fought with Phelps, she would go yell at him, better than nothing. But he listened, for the first time in his life.
"The girls are in the courtyard, won't come back any time soon" He'd heard them plan a picnic during breakfast, they could go to Hogsmeade or bother some Gryffindors. Draco always liked that. "Why would I care where the girls are?" The blonde said, his voice tense.
"Alright, it was just a comment" Blaise raised his hands in surrender, Malfoy was not going to do anything. He figured after a day she'd try to speak to Draco and for that he made sure to endure almost two hours of eye-rolling from the blond to knock some sense into him. But she didn't, and with effort, he could lower Draco's anger but his ego was just too big to handle. Like hell if they didn't make up, it had taken time and energy to make Draco a somewhat sensible human being for a simple fight to ruin it all. If he wasn't going to do something about it, then that's what friends are for.
"You know what, I have something to do" The Slytherin said, patting Malfoy's shoulder as he muttered 'Whatever'. Zabini sped through the corridors, ideas running in his brain. Some just too unlikely to try, some plausible and some incomplete. His little light turned on as he saw Daphne quietly conversing with a Hufflepuff boy.
That's just what I need. He jogged a couple metres to reach them, "Daph, sorry" he interrupted, later he'd find out their deal, he always did. "Got a minute?" The girl just blinked at him, nodding slightly and waving her friend goodbye.
"I sort of need your help now" He confessed. "Is everything alright?" The girl asked, it was believable something wasn't, with how things out there were. "Yeah, yeah. I just... You know how Draco and ..."
•••
It was eleven o'clock in the Slytherin common room and the Malfoy heir had the same resolution as the day before. Truthfully staying in his room was boring, all his stuff was already packed and he didn't feel like listening to Goyle rant about whatever he was ranting about this time.
