.Taehyung didn’t know how to apologize—or more importantly, what to say. Words escaped him.
Standing outside Jungkook’s room, he nervously fiddled with his fingers, trying to gather the courage to knock on the door. But the act of apologizing felt heavier than it should.
“You can do it, Taehyung. You have to do it. I miss Jimin... I wish he could apologize in my place,” he muttered to himself, tension etched across his face.
Just as Taehyung raised his hand to knock, the door opened on its own, revealing a disheveled Jungkook. His hair looked like he had just walked out of a battle, and his bloodshot eyes spoke volumes of inner chaos.
Taehyung swallowed hard at the sight. Jungkook’s gaze fell on Taehyung’s raised hand, and in that moment, he seemed to understand the situation. Taehyung cleared his throat, attempting to speak, but his voice failed him.
“Leave.”
The coldness in Jungkook’s command hit Taehyung like a slap, making his chest tighten with pain.
“Listen—”
“I said leave.”
This time the venom in Jungkook’s voice made Taehyung shiver. But Taehyung, being who he was, didn’t know how to back down.
“Can you lis—”
Once again, Jungkook cut him off and stepped back into his room.
But before he could close the door, Taehyung pushed it open and stepped inside.
He knew barging in like that was rude and far from royal behavior, but desperation had taken over. Without thinking, he grabbed Jungkook’s wrist—another act that betrayed the decorum he was raised with.
“I’m sorry…” he said, his grip on Jungkook’s wrist anchoring him as emotions churned inside.
Guilt weighed heavily on Taehyung. After learning the truth about Jungkook, he couldn’t stop feeling horrible. He couldn't imagine how Jungkook had endured such torment and still stood strong.
He looked at Jungkook, a strong urge rising within him—a need to embrace him, even if it meant shattering the composed image he always maintained. Their eyes met.
“I apologize for every... everything I... I... said.” The words were hard to say. His mind kept showing him flashes of the pain Jungkook might have gone through—pain that might have taken him to the edge of death.
“No need to sympathize with me—”
Jungkook stopped mid-sentence, stunned, as Taehyung suddenly pulled him into a tight hug. His eyes widened.
“I’m not... I... I’m sorry for crossing the line again, you know... I’m stubborn... I listen to my heart, and... it said you needed a hug.”
Jungkook stood overwhelmed. No one had ever tried to understand him this deeply before.
“I hate you for treating me the way you did back then, and your past doesn’t justify your actions... You... you were so brutal to me,” Taehyung murmured, still holding on.
“But I hate myself too now—for judging you without knowing anything about you.” His voice cracked as emotion washed over him. Painful memories flooded back. The hurt he had endured resurfaced. Jungkook knew he had damaged Taehyung more than words could fix.
Jungkook looked down at Taehyung’s trembling form. He instinctively raised his arms to hold him, but stopped himself.
“I-I never wanted to show this side of mine to you, but I... I don’t know why I feel so sad. It feels like... I’m the reason you were hurt. I hate it, I hate it.”
Taehyung stuttered, his carefully guarded mask now shattered. His grip on Jungkook’s shirt tightened. Jungkook could feel the pain radiating off of him.
Taehyung had always been strong—physically and mentally—and Jungkook had seen that. Which made this moment all the more heavy. How much pain had Taehyung buried inside to break down like this?
Unable to take the discomfort in Taehyung’s expression any longer, Jungkook gently pushed him away.
Taehyung’s eyes were red, brimming with the tears he was trying not to shed. He looked up at Jungkook with his big, blue eyes, and Jungkook quickly averted his gaze, gulping. There were moments when he found himself enchanted by Taehyung—and he hated himself for it.
“You promised me to never show your weak side. Where’s that promise now?”
Jungkook's voice was once again sharp. He didn’t want Taehyung to get attached.
“Tsk… I broke that promise of mine the day I realized something. The day I realized what you mean to me. But I was blinded by the hatred I created because of what you did to me. I broke my promise the day I realized how pathetic I am. How pathetic I am to still feel this way after everything you did to me.”
Taehyung’s words left Jungkook confused.
“What do you mean? I thought you stopped admiring me the day I sent you to the training camp.”
His tone was flat, but a flicker of curiosity slipped through.
“I myself don’t know what I mean... or maybe I do, but I’m too much of a coward to accept it—or tell you,” Taehyung mumbled, eyes still fixed on the floor.
Jungkook’s frustration grew at Taehyung’s unclear words. He gently placed his fingers under Taehyung’s chin and lifted his face.
“Tell me what you mean.” This time, there was emotion in his voice—fear.
Taehyung’s heart skipped wildly. He opened his mouth, but nothing came out. That small gesture had shaken him to his core.
“Leave,” Jungkook said, letting go and turning his back to Taehyung. His voice once again cold and authoritative.
“Koo—... Your Excellency.”
Taehyung caught himself mid-name, correcting his tone and bowing. Jungkook clenched his jaw. He didn’t like the emotions rising within Taehyung.
“Before I leave, I want you to know that I forgive you for everything you did to me. I’m even thankful that you sent me to that training camp—it made me stronger.”
Taehyung stared at Jungkook’s back.
“And I hope you forgive me too—”
“You talk a lot,” Jungkook muttered, brushing past Taehyung and walking out.
Taehyung placed a hand over his shoulder and looked down, tears quietly streaming from his eyes. He sniffled and glanced at Jungkook’s bed, unaware that a certain raven-haired man had stopped in the hallway and was now looking back at him—with a storm of emotions in his eyes for the first time in decades.
