Sungjae broke into a loud, sarcastic laugh as the color drained from Jungkook’s face.
Taehyung instinctively stepped back, blade raised, sensing a threat pressing closer. But before he could act, his energy began draining rapidly, his body growing weaker with every breath.
“Oh my!” Sungjae sneered, his voice booming over the battlefield. “You really thought you two could hide your little love affair? Look, people—behold your king’s betrayal! Not only did he form a bond in secret, but with his own blood! Eugh, disgusting!”
Gasps and horrified murmurs rippled through the army, their loyalty shaken by the venom in Sungjae’s words.
Jungkook’s aura flared red, fury etched into every line of his face, but before he could strike, Jaehyun stepped forward.
“Taehyung is not his blood, so stop spewing nonsense!” Jaehyun thundered, his voice cutting like steel through the chaos.
All eyes turned to him.
The anger burning in Jaehyun’s gaze was deadly. The murderer of his mother and the cause of his father’s misery stood only feet away, and the fury nearly consumed him.
“I loved Taehyung like my own child—and still do,” Jaehyun’s voice broke with restrained rage, “but that doesn’t change the truth. He is not my son. So you have no right to accuse our king of sins that don’t exist!”
Taehyung’s chest tightened, his eyes glistening as he looked at Jaehyun with wordless gratitude.
Eunseo scoffed, her lips curling. “Oh… now that you’ve cleared that up. But don’t you think it’s selfish of your king to form a bond—knowing full well the consequences? Such a selfish king.” She flicked her gaze to Sungjae, who gave a subtle, sinister signal.
“We’ve not formed any bond!” Taehyung’s voice cracked as he screamed, unable to take another second of the poisonous lies.
“Even if they have,” Yuna cut in, her sword pressed firmly against her chest, her eyes burning with conviction, “who are you to judge? We stand with our king. Always.”
“Yes,” San stepped forward, voice steady as steel, “our king has sacrificed more than anyone. And if the time has come for us to sacrifice for him, then so be it. We will not falter.”
Sungjae’s jaw clenched, his plan crumbling before him. “Dumb fools,” he hissed under his breath, fury boiling as his first scheme to divide them failed.
The air thickened. In the next breath, the battle erupted in full force.
Sungjae tore through vampires like weeds, merciless and precise. Beside him, Eunseo chanted with her coven, weaving a witchcraft circle that began to thrum with dangerous energy, meant to entrap an entire section of Jungkook’s army.
No one noticed when a thin ray of cursed light streaked through the chaos and struck Taehyung.
Mid-swing, Taehyung collapsed to his knees, clutching his stomach as agony ripped through him, curling his body inward. His scream was swallowed by the clash of blades and roars of rage.
“Taehyung!” Jungkook’s cry cut through the din. His eyes widened as Hyuntaek lunged at the fallen boy with his sword raised.
