“We were waiting for you to appear.”
One of the men finally spoke, voice sharp like a blade in the darkness.
Taehyung growled low in his throat, stepping forward with defiance radiating from every movement. His eyes flickered — glowing violet, then fading back — a dangerous warning that he wasn’t scared.
Not of them.
Not tonight.
But even his brave posture faltered slightly when his eyes landed on Misoo’s lifeless body.
Jimin’s mother was dead.
Jimin stood frozen beside her, so stunned that even his tears refused to fall. His lips quivered, but no sound came out.
Taehyung’s mind raced.
How did they cross the territory?
The borders were patrolled fiercely. For them to sneak in unnoticed… they had to be exceptionally skilled.
Assassins.
“What do you want?” Taehyung snarled, stepping subtly toward Jimin — who was dangerously close to the intruders. He had to protect him.
Suddenly, the light bulbs in the house flickered violently. A loud clap of thunder cracked the sky, vibrating through the walls. The power died. Darkness swallowed the space, save for the flashes of lightning from outside the open windows.
And it broke something in Jimin.
“WHY?! WHY DID YOU KILL MY MOTHER?!” Jimin screamed, voice raw as he launched forward blindly.
“Jimin, no—!” Taehyung yelled, barely reaching him in time.
He dragged Jimin back just as one of the intruders raised a blade, poised to strike. Taehyung held him tight.
“Shhh... Jimin... think—think from your mind right now, please...” Taehyung whispered, breath heavy. “They’re not ordinary. They're trained. You can’t win this way.”
Jimin trembled, barely able to nod. His body was shaking violently in Taehyung’s hold.
One of the attackers stepped forward, voice gravelly and cold.
“We killed her because she got in our way. We’re here for him.”
He pointed directly at Taehyung.
“If you value your life, move aside. We’ve been ordered to take his head. Nothing else matters.”
Jimin’s whole frame shook. “You’re... you’re not touching him! Not while I’m breathing!”
Taehyung’s eyes narrowed, fury bubbling beneath his skin.
“Oh, we’ll fix that,” another wolf sneered.
“We’ll just send you to your mother too.”
Their laughter echoed through the dark house like a chorus of death.
“Jimin...” Taehyung's voice trembled with urgency. “Run. Run to your room and don’t come out. Please—”
But Jimin shook his head violently, panic stealing his reason.
A thunderclap boomed again. The lights were completely out now.
And then—
“Jimin, RUN!”
Taehyung saw it before Jimin did — a blur of motion, a blade, flashing silver — and without thinking, he pushed Jimin behind him, taking the full force of the strike.
