"I swear on my entire fucking life, I will genuinely commit suicide if I don't get a hundred on this test! I aced it!" I tell Eliana as we walk to math to get our end of year test scores.
Malik, Asher, Leah, Pedro and Habeel are already there as we arrive, anticipating our scores. My last time receiving test scores for maths in this school.
It feels weird. An unknown sense of dread encompasses my heart as I get ready. I wish I didn't have to leave.
"Who wants to go first?" Mr. Reid asks us.
"Me." Asher goes first, getting an 83%, just one percent below a 9. This isn't good. Then, goes Pedro with a 80% and after that, Habeel with a 86%.
Now, it's Malik's turn and he gets a-I don not know because he chooses to keep it a secret.
I know it is not good.
Malik forces a smile yet still doesn't leave. "Is this a prank? Why are you lying to me?!" I question, fury coating my words.
"Just stop." He whispers and I know that feeling.
I hate that he's going through that.
I hate myself that I hate that he's going through that.
"Mine, please." Leah asks and she got a 93%. Eliana gets a 94%.
I smirk. "Mine?"
"99%" He replies.
My face contorts into disappointment, "Aw, man! I fell asleep for 20 minutes during the test, no!"
"Siyana, for the question that you got wrong. The answer was technically correct, however, the mark scheme clearly only accepts basic inequality signs, so you lost the mark. Your answer was way too complicated for the question."
"Homegirl, what?! I lost a mark because I am too smart. Bruh." I sigh.
"Can we check our papers?" Asher asks and we do. Habeel and Pedro continue bugging Malik about his score and he does not reply.
Looking at my test, I groan at how much of a fucking disappointment I am and place my head in my hands. "How much did she get?" A guy asks Habeel.
I shake my head. "99%"
His jaw drops. "That is so good! You lost like half a mark!"
"Actually, it was one whole fucking mark."
"So? Why do you look like you are about to cry?" He looks fucking puzzled.
As he gets closer, Habeel blocks his way and murmurs, "It's something only toppers get, okay? I don't fully understand either but let them be." Them?
I turn around, to watch Malik staring at his test blankly. "Malik?"
His eyes finally return.
"What did you get?" I try to stay neutral but I feel so bad.
The moment I ask him his score, his eyes gloss over and he responds, "84%. I lost eight marks. Eight."
What the fuck?
I am sorry, but there is no way my silverboy got any less than a 95%. 84%?
Only Habeel, Asher and I hear his score because other people are clearly hounding him for a reply or for a result but he holds that one blank stare that petrifies me.
