Chapter 6: Saturday Morning

It is not normal, and will never be normal, that my father is home without any occasion or notice. Daniel Cedric William is the epitome of business in the world of commerce and prioritizes his company more than his family. He rarely visits us and usually during birthdays only.

I was walking towards our porch when I saw him leaning on the doorframe, suit still on, briefcase on one hand. It looks like he has just arrived as well. I mentally scan my brain if I’m missing an important celebration today but found none.

“This is not normal…” I said slowly, as if writing the words in big bold letters on a paper.

“Where is your sister?”

“Volleyball practice. Brody will drive her home.” I answered him almost automatically. “…Why are you here?”

He straightened up and with a grumpy frown, he asked, “Brody? The Miller kid? Your boy?”

I nodded hesitantly. I really don’t consider Brody as ‘my boy’ because that can be interpreted in many different interpretations, much to my father’s growing suspicions that I might be homosexual since I don’t date girls in my school.

“Is he dating your sister?”

I suddenly grimaced. I have never given much thought of Brody’s relationship with Natalie till now, even though I know Natalie fancies Brody, she’s never obvious about it in front of him.

Besides, I think Brody is still goofing around with that girl Alicia… or Patricia or Marissa.

“He is just a friend.” I answered him then asked, “Why are you here?”

“You don’t sound so happy that I’m here.” He noted, walking inside the house.

In the center of our living room, a huge painting is lying aimlessly on the floor, probably half the size of a cinema screen.

I look at it in awe. I may not look like an artsy guy but I have always loved going to galleries and museums just to stare at paintings. This one is an oil painting and is supported with wood. I’m not very knowledgeable about painters but I’m sure this is not from a famous man. The style is a bit rough and some details are uneven but the overall appearance is very nice.

I lifted my gaze to my father, observing him. He never expresses any obvious taste towards arts. Another reason why I don’t like him. I love everything about art.

He looked back at me, his blue eyes intently boring into mine. I hate it when he looks at me like that. It reminded me of the time he caught me watching porn.

“Your sister should be home by six or this Brody guy will be dickless by evening.” He warned.

“She’s an adult.” I countered.

He ignored me and walked out of the room, swinging his briefcase childishly. My father just won’t let go of his possessive paternal instincts when it comes to my sister. If he only knew how Natalie behaved at school, she will be homeschooled for the rest of her life.

I looked back at the painting. It is colorful enough to make any room look homey. It is a painting of a woman sitting in the middle of a garden under the blue sky. She is smiling and cradling two babies in her arms.

On the bottom part of the frame, there is a NW3 written messily in small letters.

I have never heard of such painter before…
