Chapter 7: Aria and My Parents (Part 2)

Aria Gabriels’ POV

I know it is a given fact that Nathaniel William is not a person made for mindless conversations. I personally think he is not a person made for talking at all. He just sits quietly and listens, or at least, I assume he listens...

Being alone in a car with him is not comfortable… at all. I barely knew him and he barely knew me, I feel like the situation demands an obligatory conversation that I should start since Nathaniel doesn’t looks like he’s planning on initiating one. But talking to him would be so much easier if he’s ugly. I mean, that way I wouldn’t felt the need to cast my eyes downwards when we’re talking because every time I look at his face all I wanted to do is to look at his face. If he’s ugly then at least I would have a bit of self confidence to make long eye contact with him.

“So, what’s the deal with Brody?” I asked, attempting to break the still aura.

The car swerves a little to the right as if my question surprised him. We almost bump the driver beside who is trying to overtake us. I saw the man inside the car glaring at us and I immediately avert my gaze forward. He looks scary.

“Sorry.” Nathaniel mumbled quietly.

I look at him. He seems tense as he grips the steering wheel, eyes focused on the road, lips on a straight line, eyebrows scrunched. This is not the face of a happy person…

“Am I making you uncomfortable?” I bluntly asked him.

“Yes.” He bluntly answered me.

I smiled and looked at the road. “You make me uncomfortable too.”

“I know.” He said with a hint of amusement. “So, what were you saying before?”

I blinked in surprise. I didn’t expect he will actually answer that question. I awkwardly cleared my throat. “Erm… the deal with Brody?”

He shook his head, “Can’t tell you.”

“Awesome.”

“But it involves you.” He added.

I look at him, confused. “Me?”

He nodded.

“What about me?”

“Can’t tell you.”

“You are very informative.” I rolled my eyes. “What could possibly involve me in your deal?”

“Many things.” He shrugged. “Hey, I’ve gotta warn you, when my mother sees you…”

He left the sentence hanging and I’m waiting for him to finish it but he just kinda left it that way.

“Wassup.” I mumbled, looking at him expectantly.

His lips curved into a cute small smile, looking like a little kid. “She can be overdramatic at times…”

“Mothers.” I laughed. “I know about your mom.” I told him. “I know about your family, actually.”

For the first time in the whole car ride, he glanced at me. It was a swift glance but it instantly made me froze. For three days that I’ve known him, he rarely looks at other people aside from his little group. He doesn’t bother to act or pretend to be friendly for the sake of gaining friends. The distance of his chair from his seatmates can speak for itself. At school I know he doesn’t have a choice but to mingle with me because Georgina drags me into their group and Brody is my cousin, he has no choice but to talk to me. But now, alone with him, this is a very different situation.
