~Noah~
The borrowed hospital pen swiftly glided across the paper, tracing my signature onto the birth certificate of Leo Carter, along with what seemed like thousands of other forms.
I stood at the front desk, a poor, tired nurse sitting across from me, guiding me through the confusing paperwork.
Michael fidgeted anxiously next to me, waiting not-so-patiently for the doctor to return with Leo for us to take home.
"And I need both the parents' signatures here." The nurse stood up from her office chair behind the counter, their finger pointing to the two small lines on the piece of paper.
I signed, handing Michael the pen as he stroked it across the page quickly without much attention.
Which somehow came out flawless compared to mine.
"Thank you, I think that's all I need from you." The nurse smiled. "Doctor should be out shortly." She took the stack of papers away from me in a swift motion.
"It's been forever.." Michael's soft, unsure voice spoke from beside me, arms resting on the counter and head slumped in the make-shift pillow.
"You hungry?" I changed the tone, the tips of his ears rose at the mention of eating. His head remained lowered, ignoring it.
"Wanna eat at home.." He blinked slowly with a tired expression he attempted to hide.
Before we got discharged, he was given a ton of sedatives, apparently to 'help him transition home'.
He just seemed tired, maybe less anxious only because he was too exhausted to worry.
He soon lifted his head as if on instinct, a new scent entering the room as his eyes searched for it, fixing on the doctor walking in with a small, wrapped up object in his arms.
"His recovery has been well, bring him here immediately if you notice any bleeding or discharge of any kind." The doctor started to speak, unwrapping the blanket from Leo's face, but before I could catch a glance. He was snatched from the doctor's arms.
Michael held him close to his chest, scenting and kissing his head protectively.
"Thank you." I said, eyes lowering down to the baby.
All I could see with Michael holding him so tight, was tuffs of red hair.
I guess that hair is a strong gene.
I gently pulled the blanket back as Michael's grip loosened ever so slightly, holding him cradled.
He had big, blue eyes that seemed to dilate with curiosity as he stared up at me. His mouth opened with a quiet yawn, his body curling up in a stretch.
"Hi.." I whispered, a smile forming on my lips.
He continued to stare at me with a slightly parted mouth, whining quietly as his red-fur covered ears slowly peaked up.
I gently picked him up from Michael's arms, laying him down on my chest. He scrunched his body together as he closed his eyes, soft cheek rested on my shoulder while I swayed back and forth lightly.
I'd forgotten how small they are, practically small enough to hold in one hand. And squishy, it felt like I could mould him into whatever shape I wanted.
"C'mon, let's get home."
A smile formed on my lips as I glanced in the car mirror at the backseat. Leo sat in his car seat, happily sucking on his fingers as his eyes met mine.
My chest seemed to lift when I looked at his innocently happy grin.
This stage, where his entire world is just us and all he knows is love, was something I wish lasted longer.
My gaze lowered back to the road, seeing Michael fast asleep in the passenger's seat next to me.
Even if the drive was only a couple minutes long, whatever sedatives they gave him were definitely working.
