Impulse (Calum Hood)

Fun fact: I have severe ADHD, and the first paragraph is part of my experience with the disorder. Also it sucks because I'm really impulsive, so when I get really frustrated I end up throwing something across the room. I also have very slight dyslexia. So school kinda sucks.... I didn't give the girl a name because I'm trying to make this as canon as possible. Also I don't really know why I put Ellen in the story, I kinda just thought who has fun interviews and that's who I can up with.

Prompt: Can you do one where Calum has adhd.

When Calum was 14 he was diagnosed with ADHD. Everybody around him knew he had the disorder, but his parents never took his to a psychiatrist to get diagnosed. They thought that Calum just got distracted really easy. That was true, but he also had other symptoms, that his parents took as part of him, like having horrible organization skills, constantly starting projects, yet never finishing them, constantly moving around no matter what he was doing and always acting on impulse. His parents finally took him to a psychiatrist after year 8 after he begged them to take him, saying that it was the reason that he almost failed that school year. Surprisingly or not, his diagnosis came out so bad that he got pulled out of music because he had to be placed in a assisted learning class for his elective.

His parents also got him several tutors, one of them being Liz Hemmings for math. The boys had said several times that Luke and Calum had hated each other for and that was the reason why. Cal was scared that Luke would tell everyone about his diagnosis, he hadn't even told his best friend Michael at that point.

His medication also gave him insomnia so he picked up the bass to pass time, he could already play guitar, so he thought the bass could be a step up. He also started watching a bunch of covers on YouTube, he really wanted to make a band, but the only musicians he knew in his area was Michael and his sister Mali. At school Calum started noticing that people were making fun of Luke at school for something he posted on YouTube. This caught Calum's attention so as soon as he had internet access he searched 'Luke Hemmings YouTube' on Google. A few videos popped up and Calum watched them all, sure Luke messed up a bit, but overall he was good at guitar and singing.

The next day during Calum's tutoring session Luke came down to do his homework at the kitchen table like always and although the two didn't talk much at school they greeted each other kindly. Calum couldn't concentrate the entire time, he really wanted to talk with Luke about his covers and playing the guitar. He didn't even realize that he was staring off until Luke said something.

"Calum, are you okay?" Calum snapped out of his head and looked at Luke.

"I saw your cover" Luke rolled his eyes, he expected to be insulted by Calum, but he was surprised, "I was good, I liked the strum patterns and chords you used on the guitar."

"Do you play" Luke said, he didn't see Calum as a music person and was surprised that he even knew what a strumming pattern was.

"Yeah." Calum was tapping his fingers in anticipation.

"Wanna play mine" Luke asked. Calum nodded and both of the boys walked up to Luke's room.

Calum awkwardly sat on the end of Luke's bed and strummed out all the string separately making sure they were in tune. The started playing the chords to Check Yes Juliet, singing quietly along. Luke sat across from him, he couldn't keep himself from singing along randomly harmonizing during the choruses.

"I play bass too" Calum finished, "My friend Michael and I are gonna jam after school tomorrow you should stop by."

In a way Calum's ADHD created 5sos because the way the boys met Ashton was again through Calum's ADHD. Everyone knew that Ashton struggled with depression before joining the band, he had the same psychiatrist as Calum. The psychiatrist had all of her patients attend a group session at least once a month, the two had gotten close and they both had been in a band before. So when they needed a drummer for 5sos, Ashton was the first person that Calum texted to come over to jam with the three of them, knowing that Ashton's band had just broken up. The boys only had to play one song for the boys to know that they had a drummer. So they made their cover of Teenage Dirtbag and went from there.
