Chapter 15
I was basically dragged to school by Iris. I couldn't even walk in without my eyes tearing up. I looked at the spot where we had our first kiss, where we ran down the hall, where everything that ever happened... Happened. I jumped when a hand was delicately placed on my shoulder.
" How are you feeling?" Brice asked. I looking into his sad eyes and noticed how sincerely he had asked the question.
" Better I think." It came out more as a question then an answer.
" I don't believe you." Both Iris and Brice said in unison.
" I need to get to class." I said pushing past them. I didn't look back as they called my name. I walked faster until I was safely in class. What I forgot was that Brice was in my first period. I inwardly groaned as he sat in his seat beside me.
Class started and the teacher began to put us into groups. Of course, with the luck I have, Brice was in my group along with Chuck and Nathan. They pushed our desks together and I leaned down in my seat, as if I could disappear.
" Your assignment is to write down, in Cornell notes, these categories; country, vegetable, dog's name, cartoon character, color, and music artist." The teacher said handing us sheets of paper.
" What you will do is list things pertaining to these categories on the left hand side, then write a story. The tricky part is to use the word you chose in the story on the exact line that you wrote it on the left side. You have a minute to complete the listing portion. You may begin."
I reached for the paper at the same time Brice did. Our hands touched and he looked at me sympathetically. I averted my eyes and started on the assignment.
Country: Asia
Vegetable: Broccoli
Dog's name: Jada
Cartoon character: Boots
Color: Purple
As I wrote this I felt for the purple penny in my pocket that I had ripped out from the scrap book. I took it out and let a tear fall onto my palm. I wiped it off on my jeans and continued, ignoring the looks I got from my group.
Music artist: Taylor Swift
" Times up. Now you have 5 minutes to begin your story. Go."
I noticed how my story was set in my own emotions.
One day a girl in Asia sat down to a family meal. Tears fell onto her plate of Broccoli and sticky rice as her memories fled to her lost love. Her dog Jada pushed her leg, noticing her sadness. She bit at her jeans and stolen her boots. Aggravation
" Stop." The teacher said and everyone dropped their writing utensils.
" Now pass your papers to the right. On the paper you receive, you will continue the story using their listed words." I groaned out loud as I passed the paper to Brice. He would read it and know the reason I wrote it.
By the time My paper got to me, I had turned everybody's story into a depressing one. They all stared at me and I just grabbed my paper. On the bottom, in small writing, was a note. It was in Brice's hard to read hand writing and it said;
" We need to talk."
Josh's POV
I looked out the back of our mini-van as my dad slowly drove away.
I saw her wipe a tear from her eyes. I could feel tears coming in my own eyes.
I never cried. Never. Not even when my grandfather passed away 3 years ago.
When we boarded our plane to Alaska I let a single tear fall. My mother sat next to me and gave me a sad look. I knew she felt bad.
I turned off my phone and pulled out a book. As we took off, I looked out the window and said goodbyes to the place I loved.
Cari's POV
When the assignment was done we all put our seats back and had the last 15 minutes to talk.
I turned to Brice. " What do you want?"
" No need to be mean." he said.
" Fine. What do you need to talk about?"
He scooted the desk closer. " I know this is hard for you but it's not the end of the world."
Chuck walked over and sat on my desk and Nathan on Brice's.
Chuck put a hand on my shoulder. " He's right. It's hard for all of us. Brice and I lost a brother."
" I talked to him this morning." Said Brice. " He really misses you but he knows you are hurting. So is he."
" Why didn't he call me?" I asked angrily.
Nathan entered the conversation " He doesnt want to put salt on the wound."
Brice and Chuck nodded in agreement.
" We all care about you." Chuck said. " We don't want you to loose yourself because Josh moved."
When he said his name I winced. I realized how silly I was being. It wasn't like we were married or anything. He was just a guy. He had to move anyway. He couldn't stay. I got up and gave them all a hug.
" Thanks guys. This means a lot." the bell rang and we all left. We met up with Iris, Jesse, and Lily. They all came and hugged me.
" I'm fine really." I said. " The guys talked some sense into me."
We all split up for our next class. Nathan and Iris walked hand in hand while Chuck and I talked about the football game I missed the day before. I felt better but deep down I knew I would still hurt. I knew I would cry at night. But at least I had the support of people who really cared about me. Iris, Brice, Jesse, Chuck, Nathan, Lily, Layla. They were all here for me. They all cared about me. I wasn't alone.
