Maura's Point Of View:

We have been driving for a few hours, before we came up to a guard booth.
"Love and light." Jane said to the guard booth.
"Love and light. You here for the retreat?" He asked
"Yes."
"What's your name?"
"Our names might not be on your list. We just ascended, today in fact." She said grabbing my hand.
"Unless you have your Double Platinum Soul certificate, I can only let you go to the public panic area." He said
"Oh, okay, we understand." And then he let us through. We found a place to park, and headed to the lake.
"There's the lake." I said
"Well, nothing gets passed you." Jane said sarcastically. I got down on my knees, and got a sample of the water. I took a picture of the fracking equipment, then I saw two men look at us from across the lake.
"We need to leave." I said
"No I need to get a statement from Matthew Moore." Jane argued
"No, listen to me, we are in danger."
"Those don't look like yogis. What did you take a picture of?" She questioned
"Ill tell you on the car." I said and we quickly got on the car.

"Rachel definitely swam in that lake. I know why it's polluted. I saw fracking equipment." I said
"What is fracking?" She asked as we started to drive away.
"It's a controversial process to drill for natural gas. They pump hundreds of chemicals 1,000s of feet underground. It pollutes groundwater."
"That's why we pulled a Thelma and Louise?" She asked irritated.
"Well, Jane, it's illegal here."
"But Rachel was a geologist. Maybe Sensei Matta didn't bring her here to sleep with her. Maybe he brought here to help him."
"Yeah but she wouldn't have helped. Her interest was in the environment."
"Exactly. So maybe she saw what you saw, she uncovered the fracking. And that's what--" she said before a truck pulled out and crashed into us.

"You okay?" Jane asked
"I think so." I replied
"Crap, my phone is wet." She said reaching over me and grabbing her phone off the floor.
"Ow!" I said as she touched my leg.
"What? Can you move your leg?"
"No, it's stuck." I said in pain, then we heard gun shots.
"Get down. Get down. Get down." Jane repeated as she grabbed her gun and started firing back.
"Maura we gotta go. Get out of the car." She said opening my door.
"I can't get my leg out." I said trying to pull my leg from where it was stuck.
"Get out of the car."
"My leg is stuck."
"Maura, go!" She screamed. When I finally got my leg out of the car, I crawled out of the car and stayed behind it.
"Stay down, stay down." Jane said as she got out of the car and started shooting again.
"Go for the tree line. Go. Go." She said and I crawled to the tree line and she followed.

We have been walking for hours, and I couldn't take the pain anymore.
"We haven't seen them in hours. I need to stop. Oh get back here." I said sitting on the ground and putting my hurt leg out.
"What, did you pull something?" Jane asked
"No. Take it off."
"Alright, alright." She said as she unzipped my boot and took it off. My calf and ankle was cold and hard, that isn't good.
"Oh. My god, Maura. Your leg, it's hard and cold. It's like a dead body. What is that?" Jane said lifting my leg up and panicking.
"It's compartment syndrome."
"What does that mean?"
"The post-tibial artery must have ruptured in the crash."
"But you've been walking on it."
"Blood from the artery is leaking. Pressure builds and blood is trapped in one of the compartments of my leg."
"Bottom line it for me."
"The blood supply to my lower leg has been compromised. I'll loose my leg unless--"
"We get you to a hospital."

"No, unless you do fasciotomy. I need something sharpe." And I took a nail file and hand sanitizer out of my pocket.
"Maura, I'm not gonna cut off your leg with a nail file."
"Do you have sugar packets?"
"No. Why? Did you bring coffee?" She asked sarcastically
"We can use it to address the wounds. Do you still have your phone?" I said ignoring her sarcastic ness.
"Yes. Yes. Why didn't I think of that, cause we could call 911. Oh it's busted."
"Touch screen is gorilla glass." I said I took a piece of the glass and scraped it across my calf.
"No, Maura. I'm not doing this."
"It'll work. Your gonna make a six inch incision right here. Then another five inch here. Just try not to cut the superficial peroneal nerve."
"I can't do this."
"Take off your shirt."
"Okay, now I know you've suffered a head injury."
"We can use it to bind the wound."
"God, Maura, please don't make me do this." she begged.
"Listen to me. Just keep on cutting, till the bloody starts to flow."
"I'm sorry, I can't."
"You're a sprout trooper. Just once you make the double incision, you massage the wound. The blood will be black."
"I can't. I'm sorry, I can't do this."
"I'd really like me leg, Jane." I said. I laid down and she stated to make the incision.
"Use more pressure, I'm okay." I said. When I felt her make the incision, it was so painful.
"I'm not okay." I screamed, then it all went blank.

I heard Jane whisper something.
"I dreamt we where camping. I voted for you. Can you turn the heat down?" I asked cause I felt really hot. I was obviously in shock. I opened my eyes but everything is still a blur. I can't really make out what is happening.
"You won sweetest camper again. I didn't win. My leg hurts. Why does my leg hurt?" I asked. Then I heard talking. Jane and two there guys. Then I felt someone put my weak body over there shoulder and put me in a car, then buckle me in.
"Try your phone." I said still out of it.
"I can't Maura, it's busted and it got wet.
"Call your mom, tell her we're friends again." I said then started clapping.
"Okey, dokey. Hey Ma-holy crap, it works."
"The microprocessor dried, yay."
"Crap, I can only send symbols."
"Try 42.3910."
"Bing, bing, boop, boop, boop, bing bing, boop, boop." I said imitating morse code.
"That's morse code. Nice job, Maura." Then I heard Jane calling for Korsak.

Korsak picked me up and carried me like a baby.
"Did Sgt. Korsak come on our camping trip?" I asked
"Can you walk?" He asked me
"I can hop." I replied
"You stayed with her." Korsak said
"I wouldn't leave her." Jane replied.
"Here I got her." Jane said as she carried me like a baby. They took me to the hospital, then we went home.
"Frankie come help." Angela yelled then Korsak, Jane, and Frankie helped me onto the couch.
"They got Sensei Matta and his guys." Frankie said as they sat me on the couch.
"My surgeon was very impressed by Jane's incisions." I said
"I always wanted a doctor in the family." Angela said
"Where's Sophia?" Jane asked
"Asleep." Frankie replied

Jane sat next me on the couch and put my hand in her's.
"Thanks for saving my leg, Jane." I said
"I think you two should apologize to each other." My mother in law said
"Butt out." Jane and I said in unison.
"I should get going." Jane said.
"Okay. Thank you again, Jane."
"Yep. If you need anything, call. I will always answer." Jane said before leaving the apartment.
