Too Close.

Hours passed. The road never changed.

The road unspooled beneath us, long and cracked and dust-choked.

No one spoke. The hum of the van filled the silence, steady and low, like a warning left unsaid.

I sat in the back, knees bent in front of me, body still thrumming with phantom heat. Every bump in the road felt sharper than it should've. Like I was being held together with the memory of his hands.

He didn't look back again. Just kept his eyes fixed on the road ahead, jaw tight, both hands on the wheel like he needed something solid to anchor him.

But I felt it. That tension still pulling between us like a wire—stretched, waiting to snap.

My fingers curled against my thigh.

I could still feel him. Still feel the pressure. Now I sat there, aching. Still ruined. And he hadn't even said a word.

It didn't matter. I knew he felt it too. Knew it from the way he wouldn't look at me. From the way his knuckles whitened on the steering wheel. From the heat that still clung to the air between us.

I could feel the unsaid things circling like blood in water.

Could almost hear his voice if I closed my eyes.

Say it.

Say you want more.

Say you don't care what it turns you into.

But he stayed silent.

And I didn't push. Not yet. I let him stew in it. Let the want rot slow and deep in his chest until he couldn't breathe past it. Let him remember the way I touched him. The way I whispered his name when he was too far gone to answer. Let him realise this thing between us wasn't over.

Couldn't be.

Not until he gave in to it fully. Not until he came undone again—this time under me.

Outside, the day dragged on. The sun dipped lower, the silence stretched. Unchanged. But inside, as I quietly watched the way the light flicked over Damien's profile, it felt like everything had tilted.

We drove for hours.

Late in the day, someone finally asked—what we'd all been circling around.

The woman in the bathroom, she had been a scout.

Damien had known.

He didn't talk about it. Not in detail. Just gave the facts like they were weather conditions. Brief. Unavoidable.

"She came at us," he'd said. "Didn't give me a choice."

Fast. Quiet. Knife drawn.

He didn't say more. Didn't need to. The way he said us told me everything.

Not me.

Us.

Like the moment her blade cleared the air, he wasn't just protecting himself. He was already thinking of the rest of us. Of the bigger shape we made as a group. What she could've done to it if he hesitated.

And now she was dead.

It hadn't been a fight. It had been a trap. Sprung too early, dismantled fast. Quietly, efficiently, completely.
