Finally. Everyone's asleep.
I tiptoe out of the room and creep along the dark hallway to the bathroom. I wipe everything down with a Lysol wipe and take the pill with tons of water. After twenty seconds, my work is complete.
I sigh and stand up, stretching my legs.
Why on earth can't I just digest food like a human? Why does it have to be so disgusting? Lexi always looks so happy eating, why can't I be the same way?
I look at myself in the mirror. My roots are showing. I'll have to dye my hair again when I get home. My hair is naturally a dark purple, but we all dye our hair brown to avoid attention. Less memorable. It's especially important now that we're making ourselves known.
Once I'm back in lexis room, I hear a noise.
"Kat?" Lexi whispers "are you awake?"
"Yeah." I say quietly
"I-I need to tell you something..."
"Yes?"
"I... I think I saw.. a g-ghoul.."
"Huh?" I say in confusion
"Yeah..." she mumbles
"What happened?" I ask
"I was walking along and I heard some trash cans fall. I looked over and saw a wave of blood hit the wall. I was so scared.. I couldn't move. Then I heard someone, a man I think, screaming 'more! More! Oh delicious!'. Then I noticed these giant tentacles whipping around. It was so scary. I should have done something. But.." I watch tears quietly fall onto her pillow case.
"You may not know this, but I took a workshop on this. I wanted to know everything about ghouls so I could defend myself." I'm lying through my teeth. "Here's how ghouls work. They have these things, kagunes, that look like tentacles but they're not. Each kagune is unique. They basically explode out of the back when desired, needed, or strong emotions are felt..." I went to explain every bit about ghouls.
"You know how ghouls pretend to be humans?" Lexi asks
"Yeah" I respond
"What if humans pretended to be ghouls?" She says, more to herself than me
"That's... that's not possible." I say quickly
"Why not? If they can do it, than why not us?" She says impatiently
"They'd smell you. They would take one sniff and you'd be on the floor being presented as the next meal." I explain angrily
I don't want Lexi to die. I have to protect her.
"I don't think you're being fair, Kat. I could use their urine. They'd never know!" She exclaims
"Their.... urine?"
"Yeah! Like with animals!"
"Ghouls aren't animals... they're as sophisticated as humans. You would just smell like you bathe in pee." I sigh
With that I roll over and fall asleep.
