Home is where the heart is.
My home just happens to be sitting next to me. My sense of peace, my rock, and my sanity is on the passenger side of my car.
Chase's droopy eyes fall on the packhouse.
Like a child awoken from their nap, he rubs his eyes with his fists harder. He tries to wipe away the evidence of his exhaustion from my parents.
The packhouse appears awfully quiet but I know my mother and father are inside since my parents' scent fills the air. Chase's hands pull his beanie forward fixing it.
"I'm exhausted," he yawns not bothering to cover his mouth and he stretches out.
"Well so am I," shifting the car into park I stare at the house. I had a great childhood here. It was all fine until I had to fight for my life.
"Do you need a moment?" Chase looks at the house and then back at me. If I say I need time I will never get out of the car.
I shake my head and swallow down. I unlock the doors and we both get out.
Chase wants to be that perfect boyfriend that opens and closes my door but I fight him on every turn. When I walk in front of the car Chase is standing there looking at me with annoyance visible in his eyes.
"Sorry, I'm not a child I can open my own door."
Chase mutters under his breath and it sounds like, can't I have this one thing.
The packhouse is exactly like I remember it. The porch steps are still worn down from the constant traffic that this house sees. The white paint is peeling and the screen door still does not seem to hang right.
Home sweet home.
Chase walks ahead of me and knocks on the screen door and when I make my way up the steps I just swing the door open and walk in like I own the place.
"Mom? Dad," I yell from the entryway.
"Melody?" I know his voice anywhere and I smile.
Carl's head pokes out from the dining room. His green eyes meet mine.
"Hey Carl," my strides pick up as he walks out of the dining room.
Our bodies collide in a powerful embrace. When I see him my heart aches for his twin brother Hector. He died trying to save me from Ivan two years ago. They look the same except Hector had this deformity in his green eyes giving it this unique brown stripe right through it.
"I've missed you," he hugs me tighter and I breathe in his scent.
Chase clears his throat and Carl chuckles, "Melody, I think your mate is getting jealous." He pats me on the back as I pull away from him.
The boys greet each other, Chase and Carl are very close; closer than I thought that they ever would be. Carl seeks out Chase when he wants to train or just needs a guy night.
