Chapter 4:
First Day Nerves
The sound of a blood curdling scream woke Selene from her peaceful slumber. She shot up in bed, knocking Dante onto the floor, and ran to the door of her room. She sprinted down the hall towards Alice’s room and barged through the door. Alice sat in her bed, staring at a woman dressed in white Victorian clothing. But that’s not what made her scream. The woman’s head was tucked under her arm while her gaping neck had blood trickling down her throat. The head itself was dripping blood onto the floor, leaving it to form a puddle around it.
Selene looked from the terrified Alice to the woman that stood there. The head was smiling at Alice with happiness as it was tucked under the arm or its body. Selene sighed and walked into the room.
“It’s ok Alice,” Selene stated as she entered the room. “She just wants to say hello, that’s all.”
Alice looked from Selene back to the decapitated woman at the foot of her bed. Her brows knitted together. “Why?”
Selene shushed her step sister and approached the headless woman. Usually she made a habit of not directly approaching the dead but she needed to show Alice that it was ok. She clutched the rosary beads that hung from her wrist and chocked back a sigh.
“Hello,” Selene greeted the woman with a smile. She extended her hand to the ghost. “My name is Selene, you are?”
The smile on the face of the head grew ten times in size as the body grasped Selene’s hand in its own. “Eliza, Eliza Claiborne!” the head stated excitedly. “I’m so happy to be able to speak with someone! Oh it’s been so long!”
Selene continued to smile at Eliza, removing her hand from the spirits slowly. “What can we do for you Eliza?”
The stump of the woman’s neck twitched, as if she were trying to shake her head. “I just heard that new people moved in and my curiosity got the better of me.” Eliza’s body grabbed her head by the hair and moved it around Selene to get a better view of Alice. She gave the blonde an apologetic smile. “I’m dreadfully sorry Miss,” Eliza stated. “I didn’t mean to frighten you. I hope you can forgive me.”
Alice swallowed the lump in her throat and nodded her brows unknitting. “Yeah, sure.”
Eliza smiled at Alice and tucked her head back under her arm. Selene smiled at Eliza. “I also apologize for Alice’s reaction, Eliza,” she apologized with a smile. “She has just been introduced to the land of the dead and it’s all still very strange to her.”
Eliza waved it off. “It’s fine, it’s fine!” she stated with a chuckle. “I’m aware that I’m not the best spirit to look at.”
Selene laughed. She felt more at ease after talking to this spirit. “Well Eliza it was a pleasure talking to you, however Alice and I have to prepare for school.”
Eliza smiled at Selene and grasped the girl’s hand in her cold one. “The pleasure was mine Selene. Would you mind if we spoke again?”
Selene shook her head. “I would enjoy speaking to you again, Eliza.” The spirit smiled one more time before disappearing in a puff of black smoke, the puddles of blood disappearing with her.
“What happened?!” the two mortals turned to look at an exhausted Dante as he entered the room. Alice stared at him with wide eyes as he slunk his way over to where Selene was and leaned against her foot. “I…oh lord…” the imp was panting and struggling to catch his breath where he stood. “…What’s…” huff “…Going…” puff “…Oh sweet Jesus…On in here?”
