Chapter 8:
Cousin Lilith
Dante watched the siblings carefully throughout the day, making note of every unusual thing that was said or done. Every now and then he would catch “Molly” look directly at him to only turn her gaze to Selene’s face as if she were trying to solve a puzzle. That look alone set Dante on edge for if they were who he believed them to be it would mean Selene and everyone she cared about were in grave danger.
Selene remained ignorant to Dante’s discovery and continued through the day like any other. When she returned home with Alice, Allie having traveled to the mall with some of her friends, Edgar was there with a smile to greet her.
“I haven’t seen you in a while,” Selene said with a smile. “Where’ve you been hiding?”
“I’ve traveled to the land of the dead and found a position as an apprentice to a cobbler in the royal city,” he stated simply. “I figured if a mortal has enough courage to travel to the land of the dead then I should have enough to go there myself.”
A smirk formed on Selene’s face. “God forbid a mortal were to show you up.”
Edgar returned the smirk. “I can’t allow that to happen.”
“So you came to say goodbye to me then?” Selene asked already knowing the answer to her question.
Edgar nodded. “I was finally able to get away from my duties for a little while to let you know,” he stated, a sad look in his eyes. “It’s a pity really it would’ve been nice to get into so much trouble with you.”
She chuckled. “Well if you want trouble then I can always come and bother you while you’re working.”
He smiled. “I would like that very much.” And with that Edgar was gone.
Selene shook her head at his abrupt departure and climbed the stairs to her room, Alice following behind her. They entered Selene’s room, Alice’s eyes following Selene as she moved around the room to pack her bag for her stay in the palace. The violet eyed girl’s stance was relaxed, her face calm with a light in her eyes as she moved from one area to another, and her movement seemed rushed out of excitement rather than slowed with dread. Alice cocked an eyebrow at this strange behavior from Selene as she continued to stuff multiple things into her pack.
“You seem…different,” Alice stated after a long moment.
Selene didn’t bother to look at her step sister as she continued to pack. “How so?”
“Well for one you don’t look like you’re going to meet your doom,” Alice stated simply. “You look like you’re…as ridiculous as it may sound…excited to go.”
Selene stopped in mid stuff and turned to look at Alice with a dumbfounded look upon her face. “I’m not excited!” she stated, not knowing what else to say in response. “It’s just…what the hell makes you say something so stupid?”
Alice raised both brows at Selene. She had never seen the raven haired girl so flustered by something the oldest twin had said to her, it was almost amusing to watch. Alice shrugged at Selene’s question. “Nothing really,” she began. “You’re whole demeanor just seems…well…happy I guess. I don’t know; I’ve just never seen you like this before. It’s kind of creeping me out”
