Chapter 18:

There Will be Blood

The death order from Fate hid inside the king’s desk as Selene and Alice entered the office, backpacks slung over their shoulders filled with their school work. Selene was laughing when she entered making the king look up and stare at her smiling face. The sight tugged at his heart. He did not hear what she was saying to Alice as she opened the portal and watched as the blonde girl disappeared through its glimmering surface. Before Selene could exit the office Helios rose from his seat and ran to where she stood. With his eyes shut he wrapped arms around her from behind and hid his face in her hair, taking in the warmth.

Selene’s looked up at him in confusion. “Um good morning to you too,” she responded with a tiny smile only for it to disappear the minute she was the solemn look upon his face. “Helios,” she said making his eyes open and stare down at her. “Are you ok?” she asked in concern.

He nodded, reluctantly letting go of her. “Yes,” he stated. “When…um…you return I want to talk with you about something.”

Selene nodded, her confusion growing. “Ok, I’ll see you after school then,” she stated before entering the portal and leaving the king behind.

Once the portal was closed the king called Lilith and Dante to his office to show him the death order for Selene he had received. The two stared at the paper in disbelief reading over and over again the order from Fate that was awaiting the king’s signature. It did not say when Selene would die or what would cause it like all of the other death orders he had received. This one had been hand written by Fate herself and Lilith picked it up from the desk and read it out loud as if hoping it would say something different once the words were out in the air.

“The course of the mortal Selene Amelia Shay’s life is about to draw to a close,” Lilith read. “In accordance with this I Fate hereby hand over the responsibility of this mortal’s final moments to you, the keeper of the dead, in order to prepare her soul for departure to its final destination,” Lilith took in a deep breath. “However,” she sighed. “Considering the mortal has had personal contact with you and plays a large role in your life the cause and time of her death will not be listed here so you do not attempt to interfere. Your permission will not be required in order for her soul to be collected or for her death to take place as is customary. I am terribly sorry for your loss and will personally see to it Selene’s judgment, for this is what she will choose once she has no memories of her life like all the other souls before her, will be just and swift. Sincerely, Fate.”

Lilith crumpled the paper in her hands as she slammed it onto the desk, her eyes a fire in outrage. “We have to do something!”

“What can we do?” Dante asked solemnly.

“I don’t know!” She yelled a she racked a hand through her red hair. “We could lock her up here in the palace, make her a room made out of foam and bubble wrap, have someone look after her and protect her at all times.”

“So you suggest we make her a prisoner?” The king asked, his voice sounding worn by sadness and worry. “Lock her away in a room like her father did to her mother all those years ago? Keep her from seeing the light of day or live out what time she has left? What if she’s dying of an illness that we can’t prevent? What if she’s not supposed to die for another ten years?”

Lilith sank into one of the chairs in front of the king’s desk, defeated. “So this is it then,” she stated tears gently tickling her eyes begging to be let through. “We’re going to lose Selene.”
